While doing costume design for the Erdreich project, I understood for the first time—fully, crisply, clearly—that “The Collapse,” often portrayed in films as a one-day, all-destructive event, is in fact something that has been happening for a long time—since the rise of capitalism and colonialism.
I also learned that the soil, with its vivid community of fungi, microorganisms, and tiny critters, offers us critical lessons on how to live through this ongoing Collapse.
Thank you, Christoph Stec, for your—despite the image—optimistic view of the future. Asking us: What if collapse wasn’t the end, but the beginning of something new?

Das Erdreich invites you on a theatrical bus journey into the Rhenish lignite mining region. In Bürgewald, on the edge of the Hambach open-pit mine, decay becomes a generative force.
Between researchers, residents, and a mysterious fungus, a world unfolds where something new grows out of collapse. An immersive expedition into the hidden world beneath our feet – about change, transformation, and the future.

The theater piece was shown this May as part of the Sommerblut Festival.

For the costume, I added layers of latex as windows and wounds to other layers—a technique I learned from @storchauf_dem_olymp . I reused old clothes and crocheted them into hats, a technique I learned from @usia.zubr , with the help and talent of @cictcrca .

Eine Fundstelle, ein garten zwischen Welten

Anbei eine der Arten, die wir in unserem Projekt „Guardians of the Garden“ gefunden haben:

Art: Gedanke
Ort: Menschliche Vorstellungskraft
