We invite you to join us for Backstage1.

Backstage1 stems from a shared interest between Cecilia Bonilla @ceciliabonilla_studio and Chino Soria @chinosor in an experimental space for rehearsing, testing, and playing without the pressure of a final showcase. It represents a conversational process between the two artists and curator Adela Blanco @blancogallery, working together on a project rooted more in dialogue than in traditional exhibition standards.

The initiative marks the opening of Bonilla’s new London studio, opening up a living space where ideas flow.

Outside the formal setting of the gallery, the installation process itself activates the studio as a dynamic environment where trial, error, and the tension between materials and practices evolve as a collaborative and direct experience.

Private View:
Saturday 31 October, 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Open:
1 November – 17 November

Saturdays 2:00 pm – 5:00 pm, or by appointment (DM)

Location:

“It’s not a matter of painting life, it’s a matter of giving life to painting.” — Pierre Bonnard

This week we are featuring the work of Kate McCrickard, @kate.mccrickard

Kate is a British painter living and working in Paris. She studied Fine Art at the University of Edinburgh, earning First Class honours in both History of Art and Painting. In her work, she focuses on capturing the raw, messy energy of human interaction. Set in everyday spaces, from kitchen tables and betting bars to backstage rooms, her figures bring together live observation, memory, and references to art history.

Her canvases are filled with recognisable archetypes like drinkers, lovers, punks, and quiet observers. Dressed in modern clothes, historical costumes, or nothing at all, these characters mirror our noisy, screen addicted lives. They lounge, stare, and beckon, blurring the line between real people and total fiction.

What sets her work apart is its physical, unvarnished energy. Rejecting the slick, overly perfect surfaces made for digital feeds, Kate works quickly to build up rough, layered textures on the canvas. For her, paint is an unfinished medium, making it the perfect home for an imperfect world. by @blancogallery

‘After S. Sigi’ is from Charly Helyar’s Matrices series, in which she depicts fleeting domestic moments that might otherwise go unnoticed, nestling them within fragments of dismantled and reassembled furniture. Through these acts of devotion and care, the everyday is elevated.

Currently on view at @edeprojects as part of Finders Keepers, a duo exhibition featuring @charly_helyar and @eloisedeaton, curated by @blancogallery.

In 'Finders Keepers', Eloise Dethier-Eaton and Charly Helyar both use found objects from inside and outside the home as integral elements of their paintings.

Eloise's 'One Man's Trash' series is an imaginative response to the boards she regularly finds in the street or in skips. She likes the way these discarded boards remain full of potential, ready to live another life with the person who chooses to pick them up and take them home. Although they're usually made from plywood or mdf ('cheap' materials from the construction industry), Eloise uses trompe-l'oeil painting techniques, learnt during her Decorative Surfaces Fellowship at City & Guilds, and paints these boards to look like other materials such as precious marble, hard wood or even plywood. In doing so, she hopes to mess with the construed notions of value that we assigned to materials. Within the gallery, Eloise then arranges the painted boards to look like they've been discarded on the side of the street once again.

Meanwhile Charly's approach is focused on the intimate space of the home. In her 'Matrices' series, Charly represents tender domestic moments like a conversation, a shared meal or a woman bathing. These scenes are captured in her signature style, between figuration and abstraction, and her compositions are influenced by the awe-inspiring religious paintings she recently studied in Italy. Charly's small paintings on copper plates are then nestled within dismantled and rearranged parts of furniture found within the home, like cupboard doors, drawers and sewing boxes. Through these acts of devotion and care, she elevates the everyday into treasured moments.

'Finders Keepers' is on until the 20th of September. It's open Friday-Sundays, between 11am and 5pm, or by appointment, at EDE Projects, 4 Cinque Ports Street, Rye TN31 7AD. by @blancogallery
