Lately. The kids are growing like weeds and I’m painting Magic cards on Pokémon cards and the yard is starting to show out and I like how we’ve built a place we don’t want to escape from and Etta is in infinite theater camps this summer and Moses is hilarious and I think this is the last picture I took of ChickChick before a red tail hawk murdered her in the neighbor’s yard and we only found a neat pile of white feathers because hawks pluck their meals and I had to shimmy under the 18" crawlspace to pull a dead possum out of the HVAC vent and we’re so good at moving rocks and buying plants and knitting and making second entrances to our neighborhood park and taking pictures of @anniekoelle murals and bringing poetry into public spaces and today’s my birthday and I really love my little family. by @blankenship

Tour Mandy’s garden with me!

If you’ve been to any of the Plant Share events I’ve hosted over the last few years, you’ve likely met @mrsblankenship. She’s been my partner in dreaming up creative ways to give plants away and meet more gardening friends in our community. (And we have a new project underway…stay tuned!)

The plants she brings to share are usually from her own garden in the Brandon Mill neighborhood (though sometimes from construction sites, when she rescues plants that would otherwise be bulldozed).

Her garden is so special. She’s taken her time, and carved out spaces for tributes to lost loved ones, play areas for her children, a firepit for gathering, and the most stylish chicken coop I’ve ever seen.

She and her husband @blankenship have incredible taste and a knack for thrifting and upcycling. And… moving rocks.

I love when a garden reflects the personalities and talents of its makers. by @blankenship

When I stopped trying to play music in public in my early twenties I started writing poetry, and occasionally performing it live. This poem — or at least the spiritual core of it — was one of the first things I wrote in that season. I scribbled it in a journal sitting in the floor during a friend’s band practice.

It’s taken me the better part of two decades to finish it. Probably because I needed twenty more years of listening and playing. I needed to feel comfortable with an electric guitar in my hand, and dad’s old now-restored tube amp rattling the walls. I needed another D’Angelo album. I needed to have kids who wanted to share all the music I loved, and watch them begin to share back. I needed to find my voice as a poet beyond the parlor tricks of having a way with words, but nothing much to say. And apparently I needed to put the slightest bit of structure to it.

For the nerds among you, both musical and literary, most modern Western music is based on a 12-tone system that divides an octave into 12 “equal” notes. 19th-century composer Franz Liszt coined the term “symphonic poem” or more commonly called a “tone poem” to describe orchestral work that conveyed narratives or landscapes in a single-movement. Hence my “12-Tone Poem” — 12 stanzas of 12 lines to tell the story of my love of music. Enjoy. by @blankenship

Lately. We rearranged the living room (again) and put the kids in new schools where they’re thriving and we’ve suddenly got time to breathe and make things and go on walks and watch birds and Jesus Christ that’s Jason Bourne and they grow up so fast and we went to Texas and it was hot at Christmas and we went on local hikes and unlocal roadtrips and peace and tranquility are coming close. They gotta be, right? Hope you and yours are well. Say hi sometime. by @blankenship
