This one stays on the wall. The beautiful and threatened Yellow Latanier (latan palm), Latania verschaffeltii, endemic to Rodrigues island. Last night’s sunset 😍 Been thinking about selling all my photo equipment as I’ve tended not to carry it around with me anymore. The idea was to swap it for a more compact system. Truth is, I’ve acquired a few sweet lenses over the years and will surely loose money replacing them all. So, maybe I’ll try get a more convenient bag and make more of an effort. As I was leaving home for a family diner yesterday, I stopped in the driveway to go grab my trusty #nikond500 and #tamron70200 - and ended up with those instead of a phone pic. #worthit

Back in November, I had the chance of photographing the Mauritius Paradise #Flycatcher at @ebonyforestchamarel , during an outing of the “The Move” seminar on biodiversity by Cap Business Océan Indien. Of the scientific name Terpsiphone bourbonnensis desolata, locally known as “Coq des Bois”, this bird is a subspecies of the Mascarene Paradise Flycatcher endemic to Mauritius. Unless you know where to go, it is very rare to see them, as their population is estimated by @mauritianwildlife (MWF) at around 400 to 800 individuals only (2018).

While I had been intrigued by the potential of #biodiversitycredits for Mauritius, these sightings struck a chord. I wrote a short reflection on this - link in bio. Should we go there? Is a formal structuring and methodology needed? Or should each actor propose their own “offer” (caution on independent verification)? This is not me endorsing nature markets but pondering on a transition and/or supplemental mechanism for much-needed conservation and restoration finance.

Chasing angles... For the 2019 @hydrofoilprotour in Mauritius, I put the media team together which freed me to look for special shots - those you can't get if you're on duty close to the action. As they were in the bay of Grand Port, I had dreamed of catching the fleet from Mahebourg, with the famous "mouchoir rouge" (red handkerchief) house in the foreground. The angle and distance weren't quite right for the shot I had in mind but @jeromebonieux was boosting big airs between races and I was stoked to snap this one, which happens to have another Mauritian, @hectorpaturau in as well. With a little magic from @juxta.designer , this ended up on the cover of Barnes Mauritius magazine a few years later... When arriving at the Donnelly River lake (created by a small dam), this tall tree got me awestruck. Standing out from the surrounding vegetation, its stature inspired reverence, while cockatoos flying by added to the feeling of wonder. How fantastic to imagine that current trees in this once logged forest will slowly return to this size!
