“The Black church carries a prophetic obligation to name harm and demand remedy.”

Chelsea Fuller and Takara Pierce issue this call as the Christian Nationalist Right uses America’s 250th anniversary to promote a White, heterosexual, wealthy, male, and Christian nation—while recruiting Black and brown Christians to support a vision that excludes them.

That recruitment is expanding because Christian Nationalism excels at making a exclusionary political project feel like an expression of communal faith.

Take, for example, a single working mother who has repeatedly heard that having children outside marriage is sinful. She may see her financial hardship as punishment for a moral failure—not as the result of low wages or unaffordable housing.

That explanation can obscure the structural forces shaping her life. It also can influence her beliefs about poverty, reproductive healthcare, immigration, and political leadership.

Fuller and Pierce argue that progressive narratives often focus on Christian Nationalism’s most extreme White evangelical expressions while missing how the ideology moves through Black and brown faith communities.

Christian Nationalism cannot be defeated only as a political ideology. It must also be confronted at its foundational storytelling about faith, suffering, and who belongs in America’s future.

Communications work in advocacy and movement spaces is hard, specific, and often thankless. The practitioners doing it are talented, but the field still lacks the professional development infrastructure that the work demands. This means many of us are utilizing frameworks we built out of necessity, under pressure, and with no time to evaluate.

That’s what this series is for.

Black Alder has worked at the highest levels of advocacy and movement communications for years, and this intensive is our way of sharing what we’ve learned with our colleagues, who are preparing to lead high-stakes work ahead of the most consequential election in recent history.

To say I’m grateful and proud is an understatement. Most businesses don’t make it through their third year. We’ve made it FIVE without compromising our values or integrity, without being in debt and without losing sight of the ultimate goal. We managed to build and grow each year in ways we didn’t even plan for. So much of our success at @blckaldr is due to the unmatched brilliance, rigor, kindness, grace and vision of @takara.mov. For two years she took on the role of senior strategist so I could take time away to support M4BL. Thank you so much to our more than 100 clients, to @kevmp24 our partner in this work, to our friends, family and comrades for standing by us and praying over us. Here’s to the next chapter. by @blckaldr

Fun little video because today, Black Alder is celebrating five years! 🎉

In that time, we’ve worked with nearly 100 clients, helping shape narratives, guide communications infrastructure, and support partners navigating complexity and change. Reaching five years as a firm is a milestone many businesses do not reach, and we don’t take that for granted. It speaks to the strength of our partnerships, the clarity of our vision, and the care we bring to our work.

If you’re new here, we’re a communications and narrative strategy firm committed to crafting strategy that strengthens movements, shaping narratives that expand possibility, and helping our partners communicate in ways that build trust, power, and connection.

We work with organizations, creatives, companies, thinkers, faith leaders, cultural workers, and institutions who understand that story is infrastructure. We build communications systems that clarify vision, sharpen voice, and align narrative with values.

Whether we are supporting a movement organization, advising an executive, guiding a founder, or partnering with a creative, our goal is the same: to ensure that what they are building in the world is reflected in how they show up publicly.

Five years in, we are still guided by the same belief: Strategy should feel grounded, stories should feel authentic, and communications strategy should move culture forward, not just fill space. by @blckaldr

@newsone_official covered our new report, The Cost of the Story. And as our co founder and co executive director, Takara, said, our call for care is not about comfort. It is not about making sure journalists feel cozy. It is about survival. It is about ensuring that this work is sustainable enough, ethical enough and protected enough for journalists to keep doing what democracy requires of them.

A press that is burned out and unsupported cannot stand as a bulwark against authoritarianism. A press that is cared for can.

We are not only losing journalists to layoffs or newsroom consolidation. We are also losing them because they are exhausted, burned out and carrying chronic stress shaped by repeated exposure to trauma. Our data shows this clearly.

The emotional and psychological toll is pushing people out of the field long before any official cuts reach them.

That is why we are excited to share that we are taking the findings of this report and building a full curriculum and certification for reporters, newsroom leadership, journalism schools, communicators and community media makers.

The goal is to strengthen the entire ecosystem by preparing people to do this work in a way that is grounded, sustainable and aligned with the ethical duty the press holds in a moment where democracy depends on it. by @blckaldr
