POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Halloween Films Day 11 - Little Shop of Horrors
(1986; Dir. Frank Oz)

Another rare example of a remake being WAY better than the original. I don’t usually go for musicals. I don’t normally go for comedy mixed with my horror. But, this is well executed and so much fun. Plus, Rick Moranis rules.

Halloween Films Day 12 - Ravenous
(1999; Dir. Antonia Bird)

Man, I love this film. I haven’t watched this in a bit. Ravenous is one of the few concessions I make for comedic horror. Mostly because the scary parts are incredibly intense and the humor is the darkest of the dark. Everyone in this is pretty good, but Robert Carlyle is exceptionally terrifying in this cannibalistic allegory of capitalism and manifest destiny. Highly recommended. by @bleachmouth_postscript

Halloween Films Day 10 - Deranged
(1974; Dir. Alan Ormsby and Jeff Gillen)

Ormsby and Gillen both starred in Bob Clark’s “Children Shouldn’t Play with Dead Things” which is a FAR superior and scary film than this one. But, this is still worth a look. Deranged is loosely based on the crimes of Ed Gein. The story bares some similarities to Pyscho and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre but plays more like a psychological horror film than either of those. There are no real “shocks’ in this, but it is creepy in that low-budget 70s sorta way.

Deranged is definitely a product of the era. I like this enough to own this on DVD, but I can only really recommend it for the die hards and folks looking for something older, but new to them. by @bleachmouth_postscript

Halloween Films Day 9 - The Blob
(1988; Dir. Chuck Russell)

This was a fun watch. I saw this at Quaker Square Cinemas when it came out. I enjoyed it quite a bit then. I think my buddy Greg and I snuck in to see this after seeing something else and we had a blast. This is very “80s” but it still kinda holds up. This definitely has elements of body horror and 50s sci-fi tropes, but it isn’t scary as much as it is “gooey”. Contrary to boomer opinions, this is FAR superior to the original.

Halloween Films Day 8 - The Big Shave
(1967; Dir. Martin Scorsese)

I went into this short film not knowing anything about it other than it looked interesting. After watching it, I discovered who the director was and that it was a commentary on America’s then increasing involvement in Vietnam. It is definitely intense. I don’t want to give anything away (there isn’t much, still…), but the closing moments of this film remind me a lot of the color saturation in the climactic gun fight in Taxi Driver. by @bleachmouth_postscript

Halloween Films Day 7 - Shadow of the Vampire
(2000; Dir. E. Elias Merhige)

Even though I haven’t seen this in a couple years, this is probably my favorite “version” of Nosferatu, second only to the 1922 original. I love the Herzog remake and the recent one by Robert Eggers is pretty damn good, but this is just superior filming in concept and execution. Everyone is on point, but goddamn if Willem Dafoe isn’t the best Count Orlock since Max Shreck. It helps if you are familiar with the original, but the premise works without having seen that film. It looks great, is well acted and is scary while being simultaneously funny as hell. A great film all around! Highly recommended!

Halloween Films Day 8 - Sinners
(2025; Dir. Ryan Coogler)

I wanted to like this film much more than I did. Don’t get me wrong, this is a great film, but I didn’t fall IN LOVE with it the way that I wanted to, or rather the way that I would have expected. Vampire and the blues? Sign me up. Right? It looks great, the story is solid and the performances are stellar. Can we give it up for Delroy Lindo? He fuckin’ rules. ALWAYS.

But…..BUT. The messaging was SO fucking heavy handed that it felt insulting. Not that I had fault with the message itself (quite the opposite), just how it was delivered. In fact, that is part of the reason why I was so excited to see this film. I thought it was going to be the type of horror film that uses the genre as a commentary. It was definitely that, but the commentary was blatant to the point of distraction. I mean, I’m a person of moderate intelligence and understand subtleties in storytelling, including film.

However, I don’t think if the choices that made Sinners so grating are the fault of the director. Cinema over the past 20 (longer?) or so years has become so monumentally stupid. Perhaps Ryan Coogler didn’t think the audience would be able grasp a more subtle delivery? I’m not sure, but it was really, really distracting. But, that is a “ME” problem and truthfully a minor quibble in an otherwise great film.

Then why bring it up? I guess because I wanted it to be FLAWLESS. So many people I know had recommended it so highly that it was almost destined to by @bleachmouth_postscript

Halloween Films Day 6 - ‘Salem’s Lot
(2024; Dir. Gary Dauberman)

I dunno. This was fine, I guess. All of the things that made the book and then the first adaptation by Tobe Hooper interesting were gutted and replaced with a couple of decent jump scares.

All of the characterization and backstory was stripped out of this and replaced with a simple set up - writer comes back to town to research his next novel and then it is off to the races.

I’m all for a good remake, especially if it can get someone unfamiliar interested in the source material or the original adaptation. But nothing about this makes it seem like there is anything worth further exploration. by @bleachmouth_postscript

Halloween Films Day 5 -
Exorcist II: The Heretic
(1977; Dir. John Boorman)

I don’t know how I had convinced myself that I had seen this before, but upon this viewing, I am certain that I had not. So much has been said about this film (negatively) and perhaps that is why I think I had watched it before last night. I don’t know for sure.

What I do know for sure is that this film is terrible. Is it “the worst film ever made”? Not by a long shot. But, it is inexcusably bad. There are some many ridiculous ideas stuffed into this narrative that it defies credulity. It is poorly acted and it looks awful. Which is just wild because it had a great original to draw ideas from.

It starts off ok - a priest takes part in a failed exorcism is then asked to investigate Father Merrin’s death in the previous film and determine whether or not he was committing acts of heresy. Simple enough and a good premise to start. Then it just becomes unfathomably stupid.

They couldn’t even make the stairs seem scary. I’ve visited those stairs in Georgetown - they are frightening all on their own - but they couldn’t even make those intimidating.

And it sucks, because John Boorman took the brunt of the blame for this disaster. Which, is fair because he was the director, but he’s made some really good movies before and after. Hopefully, anyone not familiar with his work will start with one of those. by @bleachmouth_postscript

Halloween Films Days 2-4 “Sickness Edition” -
Day 2 - The Skull
(1965; Dir. Freddie Francis)

I’ve been under the weather. So, I’ve been watching films, but I haven’t been watching anything really challenging or writing about them. I’ve posted about this in years prior and this film falls into that category of “comfort food viewing”. In other words, I’m very familiar with it and can put it on anytime and feel satisfied. That said, this is a bit weird in spots (in a good way) and more “quiet” than most of the contemporaneous (early 70s) Amicus out put. Solid film.

Day - 3 Diary of a Madman
(1963; Reginald LeBorg)

I don’t recall if I have posted about this before, but this is another old favorite. Based on the short story, “The Horla” by Guy De Maupassant, about an invisible telepathic/telekinetic being that possesses a French magistrate to murder people. The story is WAY better than this film, but it looks great and Vincent Price is always engaging. It holds up for me on repeated viewings based on Price alone, but I doubt it would for others. Still, it is worth a look.

Day 4 - Creepshow
(1982; Dir. George Romero)

Man…82 was a great year for horror films. Creepshow is one of the best. Another classic for my viewing pleasure while I get over this head cold. This movie holds up much better than many of the era. A portmanteau homage to EC horror comics and the Amicus pictures of the early 70s by default. Every story if pretty great. “The Crate” is my favorite, but “They’re Creeping Up on You!” is oddly relevant. by @bleachmouth_postscript

Episode 128 is out now.
“Lay Down Your Souls for the Gods Rock and Roll”

RIP Cronos. I won’t say too much more because there are much smarter folks that have said everything there is to say about Venom and their impact of extreme music, particularly metal. What I will say is that they rule. I loved them from the first time I heard “Rip Ride” on a janky mix tape given to me by a friend with a more than dubious reputation. Which only makes sense because what made Venom awesome was that they too were dubious. Dubious muscians with a dubious aesthetic, with (potentially-I’ve heard otherwise) dubious intentions.

Venom rules, Cronos rules. by @bleachmouth_postscript

Halloween Films Day 1 -
Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
(1931; Dir. Rooben Mamoullian)

I caught this last night, mainly because I haven’t watched this version in a bit. I’ve always enjoyed it - It pretty much throws out the narrative of the book but still manages to incorporate many of the ideas from the source material. It addresses the nature of good and evil, evolution and sexual repression. The make-up and effects are pretty effective, all things considered. Worth a look if you haven’t checked it out. by @bleachmouth_postscript
