INTERNATIONAL ARTIST SPOTLIGHT 🇫🇷🇲🇦

Moroccan-French artist Shay Mess @shay.mess has built an international practice rooted in emotion, identity, and transformation.

Entirely self-taught, Shay developed her own visual language through experimentation, observation, and instinct. Blending realism with abstraction, her richly colored portraits reveal more than physical likeness. Through distorted forms, layered textures, and symbolic imagery, she brings the inner emotions of her subjects to the surface.

Influenced by life in France, her Moroccan heritage, international travel, and deeply personal experiences, Shay creates work that moves between cultures while remaining connected to something universal.

Her acclaimed series, Soul Distorsion, explores grief, healing, femininity, and the evolving nature of identity. Her work has traveled from Paris to London and New York, connecting with audiences and collectors across the world.

Her latest exhibition, Echoes of Light curated by @adrielle_le_belle was created in memory of her late sister, Ikram. Inspired by love, nature, and time Shay spent reconnecting with herself at a Shaolin temple in China, the collection transforms grief into remembrance, healing, and hope.

“I hope they feel seen.”

Discover Shay Mess and the story behind her work in our latest Bleucalf feature.

BLEUCALF IS COMING BACK. 🐂💙

We’re slowly bringing @BLEUCALF back to life, and as we prepare for our next major project this November–December 2026, we’d love the continued support of our community.

BLEUCALF has always been about community, artists, and storytelling, creating a platform to share the voices and perspectives of artists throughout New York City and around the world.

But this next chapter is about more than just a magazine.

Through @scottbleustudios Studios, our South Bronx headquarters, we’re working to create a home for artists, a space to gather, create, collaborate, and build community right here in the Bronx.

Every publication purchased helps us continue investing in these initiatives: documenting artists, sharing their stories, creating opportunities, and building spaces where artists and the community can connect.

📖 Consider purchasing a BLEUCALF publication and becoming part of what we’re building.

Your support helps us bring BLEUCALF back, support independent artists, and continue developing a creative community in the South Bronx and beyond.

Watching @ghostfacekillah perform at @carnegiehall, one of the world’s most iconic concert halls was powerful, but what equally stayed with us were the discussions around generational wealth, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, ownership, and emerging technology.

Power Network presented leaders including @johnhopebryant, @earnyourleisure’s @troymillings and @rashadbilal, @iambeadixon, @racqueloden, @ariansimone, @AliciaLyttle and more who helped frame Juneteenth not only as a reflection on history, but as a conversation about what freedom and opportunity look like today.

Hip-hop has long earned its place as one of America’s greatest cultural exports, but seeing a @wutangclan legend perform inside Carnegie Hall felt symbolic—a reminder that the stories born from Black communities continue to reshape institutions once considered out of reach.

Business leaders shifted the focus toward generational wealth, entrepreneurship, financial literacy, and the role emerging technologies can play in expanding economic opportunity. Rather than existing as separate conversations, the music and the panels reinforced one another, illustrating that culture and ownership are deeply connected.

Power Network reminded us that hip-hop, finance, technology, and community can share the same stage.

Last Friday was a surreal experience witnessing @meechyorg take the stage with a live band behind him. There’s something powerful about seeing an artist bring that level of intention, musicianship, and energy to a performance.

As one of our featured artists for @archiv3xyz mag, it was special to be there not only to support, but to witness the growth and evolution of someone we consider family in this creative community.

Meechy’s performance was a reminder that true lyricism is still alive. The art of being an MC goes beyond just words—it’s about presence, storytelling, connection, and setting a standard for what a live performance can be.

The night was nothing short of spectacular. Salute to @meechyorg for continuing to push the culture forward. We’re excited to keep supporting the journey and everything that’s coming next.

Big shout out to our Content Media Strategist @r1_isthename for filming the night. taken in Brooklyn, New York by @bleucalf

📸: @nygelblack 🔥🔥🔥BTS

It was really dope being a part of @fergie.baby outdoor shoot for his upcoming album cover. What stood out to me the most was seeing Harlem come together. Artist, creatives, entrepreneurs, and legends all in one space, bringing their own energy and perspective.

Moments like this remind me why community matters. There’s something special about being around people who are building, creating, and pushing culture forward in their own way.

Really inspiring to witness and be a small part of something bigger than ourselves

Huge shoutout to @nygelblack for capturing this 📸📸 taken in Harlem by @bleucalf

I had the honor of returning for a second year to speak with the incredible @prep_for_prep students as part of their @Sothebys sponsored program.

It was truly a privilege to share my journey as an artist, curator, and founder, and to talk about what it means to build a creative career with purpose and intention. I’m deeply grateful to have been invited back and trusted to pour into the next generation once again.

The students were exceptional—curious, thoughtful, and incredibly bright. Seeing their passion, confidence, and willingness to ask meaningful questions gave me so much hope for the future. They’re growing into leaders, creatives, and changemakers in ways many of us only dreamed of.

Thank you to @prep_for_prep and @sothebys for creating spaces where young people can connect with artists and professionals who reflect what’s possible. It was an honor to be part of it, and I can’t wait to see what this next generation accomplishes. Big shoutout to @0h10m1ke and @katarralaraepeterson for being such amazing host as well as for the opportunity! taken in New York, New York by @bleucalf

A couple weeks ago @bleupablo , recently sat down with artist and choreographer @karleywasaff for an interview published by @brooklynrail

The conversation explores Wasaff’s upcoming immersive work @growingtakes.time and examines the intersections of movement, community, play, conflict resolution, and collective growth. Through the discussion, Wasaff reflects on the ways art can create opportunities for connection while encouraging participants to embrace uncertainty, vulnerability, and growth.

Swipe through for highlights from the interview.

Special thanks to @brooklynrail for publishing this conversation and continuing to create space for thoughtful dialogue surrounding contemporary art and culture.

This year @bleucalf had the honor of doing official press for @friezeofficial New York 2026.

This week felt different in the best way possible. A lot less about spectacle for the sake of attention and a lot more about intentionality, pacing, and trust in the work itself. Walking through 154 Art Fair @154artfair Contemporary African Art Fair New York 2026, NADA New York 2026, and Frieze this year, I kept noticing how many galleries allowed the work to breathe instead of trying to force moments. That restraint honestly made a stronger impact.

Tanya Weddemire Gallery @tanyaweddemiregallery created one of the more emotionally grounded presentations I experienced all week. Ethan Cohen Gallery @ethancohengallery balanced experimentation and structure in a way that felt thoughtful and resolved. David Zwirner Gallery @davidzwirner showed that scale does not always have to overpower intimacy, and Jenkins Johnson Gallery once again reminded people how important historical continuity and diasporic narratives remain inside contemporary art conversations.

One of the standout experiences outside the fairs was “We Out In Queens” curated by All My Friends Are Artist @allmyfriendsareartistsnyc in Long Island City. The exhibition felt community driven in the best way. Nothing forced, nothing overproduced. Just artists, performances, conversation, and real energy inside the room.

Overall, this year’s Frieze Week felt more reflective and mature. The strongest presentations were not the loudest ones. They were the ones confident enough to let the work speak for itself. NYC art culture feels like it’s recalibrating right now, and honestly, that shift feels needed. taken in The Shed by @bleucalf

Walking in with only two hours left before closing felt chaotic at first, but even in limited time, the scale of the fair was impossible to ignore. Held at @pier36nyc, @artexponewyork brought together hundreds of galleries, independent artists, and curators from around the world — each booth carrying its own energy and perspective.

>>>> DISCOVER FULL ARTICLE W. LINK IN BIO 🌐

Organized by @redwoodartgroup, their fairs collectively have presented over 11,500 artists and draw nearly 100,000 attendees annually across events.

Everywhere you turned, there was another booth pulling you in for a completely different reason. Some spaces felt polished and museum-like, while others carried the energy of artists simply wanting to share something personal with strangers passing through the city.

I ended up interviewing two Asian artists during my visit, and both conversations reminded me how art fairs can collapse distance almost instantly. One minute you’re in Manhattan eating overpriced venue snacks and trying not to look socially awkward holding camera gear, and the next minute you’re hearing somebody explain years of creative practice, cultural influence, and personal experience from the other side of the world.

One of the highlights was speaking with Japanese artist Shu Arakawa (@godloveyou1204), whose work blends traditional Japanese calligraphy with contemporary fashion influences while focusing on cultural preservation and global connection.

“I would like to spread more Japanese artwork in the world.”

I also interviewed Tokyo-based artist @hisakazu_suzuki_art, who described creativity as something that “falls from heaven.” Suzuki has spent 48 years developing his artistic practice and exhibiting internationally.

Beyond the artwork itself, some of the best moments came from simply drifting through the venue — hearing different languages, seeing artists proudly beside their work, and reconnecting with people across New York’s constantly overlapping creative scene.
