Our species of the month for October is: Oak (Quercus robur) 🌳

The English oak tree, also known as the pedunculate oak tree, is a long living, broad leaved tree. The bark is deeply fissured, the leaves have round lobes with smooth edges and grow in bunches - and the oak leaf is used in the logo for the National Trust!

In the spring, the oak tree has light green/yellow catkins and by autumn, the oak tree has produced acorns which are held in a little 'hat' called a cupule.

Quercus is the direct translation for oak in Latin, and the scientific name 'robur', means robust, signifying the strength of oak.

However, you may have noticed that some of our oak trees around the park and garden aren't looking as robust and healthy as they should. This is due to a combination of climate stress, bacteria and a small jewel beetle called Agrilus biguttatus, which together cause Acute Oak Decline (AOD).

In simple terms, the beetle larvae produce a chemical that makes naturally occurring bacteria harmful to the tree. As the larvae tunnel through the bark, they spread the bacteria, leading to AOD.

Signs of the disease include sparse canopies, dark bleeding patches on the trunk and small D-shaped exit holes in the bark. The spread of AOD is increasing as our climate warms, because the beetles need higher temperatures to develop during their pupal stage.

Our ancient oaks remain vital havens for wildlife, supporting up to 1,000 species. Next time you see one, take a closer look. How many creatures can you spot making their home among these remarkable trees?

October is all about cosy flavours, warming drinks and a few spooky seasonal treats at Muddy Boots and the Stables cafés. 🎃☕

Treat yourself to a slice of spiced pumpkin cake, complete with a white chocolate ghost throughout October, or cosy up with a pumpkin spice latte or gingerbread latte as the days grow cooler.

The scone of the month is apple crumble - a comforting classic made with Bramley apples and topped with delicious cinnamon crumble.

Which October treat will you test out first? 👻😋

Introducing festive late openings at Blickling this Christmas! 📣✨🎄

We wanted to share that, after more than a decade of magical evenings, our Garden of Lights event will not be returning this year. We’re incredibly proud of everything we’ve created together and so grateful to everyone who has supported it over the years.

This year, we're offering something a little different. We'll be opening late on selected evenings between 28 November and 23 December so you can gather together with friends and family to enjoy a festive visit. The front drive will be lined with illuminated Christmas trees, the House will be open after dark for you to discover 'A Woolly Winter Adventure at Blickling Hall', and the Parterre will sparkle with fairy lights, traditional family games and a few baa-rilliant Shaun the Sheep sculptures to spot. The Shop and Stables Café will also be open for festive shopping and seasonal treats.

Best of all, House and Garden entry is free for National Trust members and there's no need to book. Dig out your Christmas jumper and head to our website to find out more, or search 'Christmas at Blickling'. 🔗
