🌍 Reizen is altijd onze grote passie geweest. Dit deden we al voordat we elkaar kenden. En ook daarna samen op pad—voor vakantie, voor werk, elk excuus wordt aangegrepen om de wereld te ontdekken. En ook toen we ouders werden, weerhield ons er niet van om te blijven reizen.

♥️ When I am with you, there’s no place I’d rather be. Op onze bruiloft zeiden we tegen elkaar: “Geen idee waar we ooit zullen wonen, maar één ding weet ik zeker: zolang het maar met jou is”.

🌟 De droom om samen een tijdje in het buitenland te wonen, om het avontuur, de ervaring en de vrijheid te voelen, bestaat al lang. En nu, na al die jaren, wordt die droom werkelijkheid. Onder het motto van; liever op je bek dan achteraf ‘had ik maar’ 💪.

Wat we gaan doen? Geen idee 🤷‍♀️. Zie het als een sabbatical: we gaan en ontdekken ter plekke. Het niet-weten is juist de bedoeling. Ik wilde nog posts maken over vorige reizen, maar we maken nu zoveel leuke dingen mee dat 't er steeds niet van komt 😅

Komt nog wel… als ik me verveel 😂

👁️‍🗨️ Voor wie mij nog niet kent ⬇️

Aangenaam! Ik ben Kelly, 38 jaar, geboren en getogen Brabander en iemand die graag vol gas door het leven gaat. Ik ben direct, een tikje ongeduldig (sorry alvast), maar vooral gedreven en altijd in voor avontuur.

Ik deel mijn leven met mijn lieve man (die impulsieve ondernemer). Samen hebben wij een zoon van 7 en een dochtertje van 3 jaar, die al kleine wereldreizigers aan het worden zijn ✈️

Sport speelt een grote rol in mijn leven – vroeger actief voetballen en momenteel Hyrox, hardlopen, yoga/pilates en zelfs een cursusje paaldansen. Daarnaast heb ik een grote passie voor duiken (meer dan 250 duiken gemaakt over heel de wereld, want ik doe dit al sinds mijn 9e!), natuur, fotografie en alles wat met wonen, verbouwen en interieur te maken heeft. Ons huis is na 14 jaar eindelijk af… en nu gaan we vertrekken 😅

Ik geniet van het Bourgondische leven 🍷🍽️ (vandaar al dat sporten 😜): gezellige festivals, etentjes en tijd met mijn vrienden.

🧑‍🎓 Opgeleid als nutritionist en wetenschapper (@uniwageningen), maar ben de laatste 15 jaar vooral actief in (international) business development, innovatie en commercieel management in agrifood sector. Voor mijn werk heb ik 10 jaar lang heel de wereld 🌍 mogen over reizen; met name Zuid-Europa, Rusland, Azië en Latijns-Amerika. Daarvoor ben ik op de meest afgelegen plekjes geweest. Samen met mijn zusje verhuur ik chalets en ik beleg graag - deels voor later, deels voor toffe reizen nu.

Kortom, ik haal graag alles uit het leven en leef volgens mijn motto: ~ one life, live it ~

(gelukkig denk mijn man daar ook zo over 😉)

Merk dat er veel vragen zijn over wat je allemaal moet regelen als je langer op reis gaat met schoolgaande kinderen (en Polarsteps wat te persoonlijk is), dus vandaar deze instapagina. Ik neem jullie graag mee op onze reis 🧳

🏠 Huis verhuren in het buitenland?

Wij deden het stapje voor stapje 🐢

Los van de aankoop, die best wel wat voeten in aarde had, is ook verhuur in het buitenland niet zo maar geregeld.

➡️ Wij kozen voor lange termijn verhuur. Waarom?

We wonen ver weg, dus je hebt geen controle en alles is lastiger te regelen vanaf een afstand. Natuurlijk je kan alles organiseren, maar wij willen zo passief mogelijk en zonder omkijken. Eerst maar eens even ervaren hoe dat gaat, korte termijn verhuur kan altijd nog.

Bijkomend voordeel is dat je niet heel het huis hoeft in te richten. Is natuurlijk heel leuk om te doen, maar dat komt nog bovenop het aankoopbudget 💸
🇿🇦 Zeker in Zuid-Afrika is het verschil groot omdat je daar het huis verhuurt voor lange termijn -en ook koopt- zonder keukenapparatuur. Dus scheelt een hoop budget bij aanvang.

🤝 Voor de verhuur hebben we een verhuurmakelaar in de arm genomen. Deze regelt en screent een huurder, maar is er ook voor je wanneer er problemen zijn of kleine reparaties nodig. Ideaal! Zeker als je op afstand woont. @property_withnora_helderberg

❗️Ow en voor Zuid-Afrika: regel een lokale bankrekening! Anders kan je je huur niet ontvangen 😅

Buying a house in South Africa felt like a parttime job 😅 and an adventure on itself 👇 🇿🇦

The first lesson? Do your homework and expand your network. Finding the right people isn't easy. A good estate agent, conveyancing attorney and bank are worth their weight in gold 🤝

Speaking of banks... opening a South African bank account was probably one of the hardest parts of the entire process! It turned into weeks/months of paperwork, appointments, a lot of "NO" and waiting 🚫

Another surprise was that most of the paperwork needs to be sorted BEFORE you can even submit an official offer ✍️

💱 And then there's the currency. You're buying in South African Rand, not euros. That means the exchange rate suddenly becomes very important. It can save -or cost- you thousands of euros 💶

Safety is another big difference. Where you buy is about more than just the house itself. You can buy in security estates with controlled access, guards and 24/7 security 🚓, or standalone homes with own alarm systems, cameras and electric fencing. It's simply a different way of looking at home ownership 🔐

Something else we learned is that many houses are sold 'Voetstoots' (as is). Sellers aren't automatically responsible for hidden defects, so having a thorough inspection carried out is definitely money well spent. 🔍

And finally... one thing that made us laugh 😂 In the Netherlands, a kitchen usually comes with built-in appliances. Here, the kitchen cabinets stay, but the oven, dishwasher, washing machine, tumble dryer and even the fridge are taken!

Different country, different rules. Every challenge has taught us something new.

🍇 The 12 wine farms with the most unreal views in the Western Cape ✨

🏞 Think rolling vineyards set against dramatic mountain backdrops, endless views that stretch for miles, and in some places even a glimpse of the ocean on the horizon. Add some of the best wines you’ll ever taste, top service, and a laid-back luxury feeling… and you’ve got the kind of places you never really forget

(even if your memory says otherwise 😉🍷)

✨ You don’t discover new worlds by repeating old patterns.

So we stepped out for a while; new country, new rhythm 🌍

Less autopilot, more awareness
From chaos to having all the time in the world
From being lived, to truly living

What did 6 months of sabbatical bring?
▪︎ More awareness and gratitude
▪︎ More time together ❤️
▪︎ And space to ask ourselves:
Where are we now? Where do we want to go? What truly matters? (Yeah, it may sound a bit 'airy', but I can highly recommend 🙃)

And that’s how we’re shaping the years ahead — around the values that feel right for us. At least, we try... 😅 taken in Zuid Afrika by @blijvrij

One week back, after 6 months sabbatical 🌞
Those are the notable differences between South-Africa and The Netherlands 🇿🇦🇳🇱

1. Airplane stripes - busy sky ✈️

2. Biking - we can finally bike anywhere everywhere. We really missed it (especially the kids did) 🚲

3. And of course our friends and family - they make a place home 💕

4. Parties and gezelligheid. Soon more to come ;) 💃

5. But we truly miss the rough nature of Africa; the mountains and the ocean (and of course the wine estates 😉)

🔄 And what differences stood out when we were in South-Africa? There they have:

• Bigger schools ánd sports and swimming during school hours (no evening clubs, just time at home)

• There’s such an entrepreneurial spirit — people are creative, independent, and think far beyond limits. They think big, instead of "doe maar normaal, dan doe je al gek genoeg".

• No Fristi, but Appletiser 🥤

• Homes with often multiple bathrooms, but without any insulation or central heating (even though winters can be cold). And no built-in kitchens or extractor fans 🤷🏼‍♀️

• Staff for everything — from cleaning highways to managing parkings. Or even mowing an entire sports field with a brush cutter 😅

• Hospitality that truly welcomes kids everywhere, even in the most high-end places 🙌

It sounds like a contradiction, but a lot of wine estates are perfect for kids!
Think amazing playgrounds, beautiful surroundings, great food — and of course, really good wine (for the parents 😉).

Na wat maandjes trainen was het dan zover 💥 De afsluiter van ons prachtige avontuur: de HYROX Cape Town 🇿🇦 samen met mijn hubby ❤️

Ja hoor, wij behoren nu ook tot de midlifers die een HYROX doen 😂

En wat was het leuk! Er zijn zeker nog verbeteringen, maar we gingen gewoon lekker. We hebben vooral genoten en veel gelachen 😄

Na kinderen, verbouwingen en een half jaar 24/7 op elkaars lip… nu ook samen een HYROX gefinisht 💪
Wat is de volgende uitdaging? 🔥

After a few months of training, the moment was there 💥 The grand finale of our amazing adventure: HYROX Cape Town 🇿🇦 together with my hubby ❤️

Yep… we officially belong to the midlifers doing HYROX now 😂

And it was so much fun! There’s definitely room for improvement, but we felt good out there. Most of all, we enjoyed it and had lots of laughs 😄

After kids, renovations, and half a year of being on top of each other 24/7… we’ve now also finished a HYROX together 💪
What’s the next challenge? 🔥
