“Plaza Gene” turned 100 last December and this summer he is keeping an eye on the tomato plants to be sure they don’t dry out. Being outside is his favorite pastime. ~ Every day with him is so precious. Life is so precious. I love you forever, Dad ♥️♥️♥️ by @blingraham

How can I adequately honor a dad who has loved me unconditionally for my whole life, who loved my mom every day of their 75+ years together, and treated every human he ever met in his 98.5 years with respect and kindness? Missing my mom so much this week. Tomorrow I get to visit my dad - for the first time in a year without a time limit! He told me he still turns to the spot on the sofa where she always sat to say something to her before he remembers she’s not there. 80 years is a long time to be with your beloved. We were the really lucky ones. by @blingraham

After over three months I finally got to “see” my dad! We had dinner “together” through the window as I sat in between 2 rose bushes outside. We also got to visit for 30 minutes under a canopy outside, masked and social distanced, of course. I think it actually made me miss him more, if that’s even possible. My parents truly enjoyed their 75 years of marriage. They met in a play in high school in 1940 where they had to kiss. They kissed for the next 80 years. ♥️♥️♥️ by @blingraham

A little over 24 hours ago my precious 97-year-old mother took her last earthly breath. Words can’t do her justice or begin to express my gratitude and admiration for her. She was a hero and a trailblazer in so many ways. (She was the first woman in our city to attend nursing school at the age of 45 after the women’s movement in the 60’s forced nursing schools to remove the upper age restrictions.) But most of all she was loving, generous, kind, warm, funny, wise, faithful, encouraging, beautiful and intelligent. She and my dad fell in love in high school and stayed in love for 79 years - 75 as husband and wife. I never heard my parents argue - ever.
I last saw my mom alert on Dec 27 when I walked into her room and surprised her. She was laying in bed with her eyes closed and I opened the blinds a bit and said, “Good morning!” She had begun to be affected by dementia so I asked, “Do you know who I am? It’s Barb.” She said, “Oh that’s wonderful - I love Barb!” And she did. I felt it every day of my life. She was always so happy to hear from me or see me, but she also said, “Don’t worry if you don’t have time to call or visit, I know you’re busy.” I spent a couple happy hours with her that day, then continued on a holiday road trip. This past Saturday my dad texted to say she was in the hospital but would be released on Monday or Tuesday. She was released, but not in the way we expected. Her infection turned into sepsis and within hours she was gone. I arrived on Sunday and on Monday our family surrounded her with music and toasts and phone calls from loved ones that we held to her ear so people could tell her they loved her and thank her and say good-bye. I’m sure she heard. There were lots of tears and and even more laughter and so much love and gratitude. And suddenly she took a couple shorter breaths and was gone. I was holding her hand, we were close around her and around my dad. It was painless and peaceful. But I hate that she’s gone.
Mom, I am so thankful I got to be your daughter. We had so so many wonderful times together. Thank you for teaching me by example what unconditional love looks like. Thank you for teaching me to not take life too serious by @blingraham

Thank you to all the men and women who have given their service - and sometimes their life - so that I could be safe and enjoy freedom. May your days be easy ones. 🙏🏻 And even though 44 years ago you didn’t have an option, thank you Dad (@plazagenefisher ) for serving faithfully in the Navy and coming home so I could grow up with a true hero in every way. 97 years old and still standing tall and serving others. I love you! ♥️ by @blingraham
