Today my parents celebrate 65 years of marriage — a number that really makes you stop, think and appreciate what a lifetime together means.

Growing up, I loved hearing their stories of teenage life in Rouyn‑Noranda — a rugged mining town on the Quebec‑Ontario border, nearly seven hours north of Toronto.

My mother, Marlene was a graceful gymnast, diver and figure skater and my dad, Ken was a hockey goalie and all round great athlete (family brag: my father’s first cousin, Father Les Costello captured the Stanley Cup as a team player (left wing) of the Toronto Maple Leafs in 1948!).

Growing up they would share stories about their teenage summers spent on Lac Dasserat and many other adventures over the years with their friends and siblings and on April 8th, 1961, they got married. My mom was 19 and my dad was 20. It’s hard to imagine getting married at such a young age now.

Soon after, my big sister Maureen came along, then 18 months later, my sister Shannon and then nine years, yes years, I came along — a surprise that completed our family of 5.

While still living in Rouyn-Noranda, my mother was expecting Shannon and my dad needed to make a choice, stay in the mines of Noranda or seek a different life. Knowing this, Dad started the search for a new job, in a new town. He got an interview at Phillips Cables in Brockville, Ontario, the City of the 1000 Islands and the rest is history. They left everything they knew, settled in Brockville and bought their first house when they learned they were expecting me. This is the same house that they live in today. When I say “I’m going home”, I mean it!

I have watched my parents ride the seas of married life, some are tumultuous, some are playful, some are calm but in the end, they’ve honoured their vows and have stayed together all these years. It wasn’t always easy, but they’ve made it and we are so proud of them and their commitment to each other and our family.

They have stood side by side through the good times and the bad times and now that they are in their mid-80’s they are closer than ever. We are truly blessed. Happy Anniversary Mom & Dad. We love you 💕 by @blisstoronto

I am very excited to share this wedding.
It is one of my all time favourites, among so many favourites, this one stays with me.

The day began with an intimate backyard ceremony at the brides family home. There is something very special and deeply sentimental about a home wedding, a place filled with years of laughter, love and cherished memories.

To accent the intimacy of the wedding was the ultra chic, custom designed chuppah, dreamed up, designed and built by the groom, one of Toronto’s most sought after architects. As you will soon see, this day was perfection from beginning to end.

I would be remiss not to mention one of my favourite elements of Gillian & Andrew’s wedding day…the brides silk, vintage wedding dress had been lovingly preserved and passed down through at least five generations of women. Talk about tradition! A beautiful reminder that while time moves forward, family, love, and legacy remain timeless 🤍
