Like so many of us, the Van Wickle family made a point to celebrate the Fourth of July in Bristol. They assembled here for several days with many of their friends and extended family to celebrate.

On the morning of the fourth, they would gather at their favorite spot on the parade route right on Hope Street: “Four Eagles”, their good friends the Cabot’s beautiful colonial house. They shared breakfast, and filled the front steps cheering on the parade all morning.

Later in the day, back at Blithewold, everyone enjoyed a picnic prepared by the staff. The highlight of the afternoon, though, was the “Day Fireworks” – Japanese fire-lanterns lit by the men, and enjoyed especially by the many children (including neighbors and children of the servants) in attendance. The lanterns shot up into the air like rockets, then the children chased the brightly colored tissue-paper shapes down on the Great Lawn. Claiming them earned bragging rights, and they were coveted as trophies and special mementos of the day.

We are so fortunate to have these film clips! It’s so special to see the family and their friends in action, giving us a sense of who they were much more than any photograph could.
