First Class of 2001, now Class of 2030… you know I got you Mom. I’m carrying on your legacy for our family. Getting accepted into Hampton means everything to me, especially knowing where I come from and everything it took to get here. There were days I ain’t wanna get up, days I sat in my room thinking about my brothers, and days I just wanted to leave NYC and experience something bigger.

What hurts the most is starting this journey with Nuski and finishing it without him. My best friend, my closest mans, and not having him here for this moment don’t feel right. Dijon, my older cousin, always had my back and treated me like a little brother no matter what. DLee, another older cousin, the reason I even picked up a basketball, the superstar on the block who showed me what it looked like to be great. Countless days you cooked me in the park and just showed me it’s levels to this basketball stuff. And Danny, always making us laugh, turning any situation into a joke whether we was in trouble, in class, or just outside with the bros.

Graduating high school and reaching this point without ya’ll hurts more than anything, but I know this is what I gotta do. I’m doing this for y’all, for my mom, and for everyone who believed in me. I’m taking all of y’all with me to Hampton, and I’m gonna make sure y’all names live on through everything I do.

Ma Dukes had me at Hampton every chance we got, anytime we drove through Virginia for a tournament or anything. I grew up hearing her stories about her time there with Auntie Kia and Auntie Sheryl, like it was bigger than just a school. I was in Hampton gear at the football games, basketball games, step shows, track meets, even in the hotels with the football team meeting players. That energy stuck with me. Hampton been in me since I was born, before I even stepped foot in high school it was already my number one. Now I’m doing this not just for me but to be a role model for my little sister and for everybody who looks up to me. I’m proud to say I’m a Hampton baby for real. taken in Harlem by @blizzyyx
