Hillman College: What A Different World Got Right

Hillman College wasn't real, but tell that to anybody who attended an historically Black college or university. For all its sitcom exaggerations, A Different World understood the rhythms of Black college life: the students with big personalities, the professors with even bigger opinions, the campus romances, the parties, the politics and the debates that could turn a casual conversation into a full-blown symposium.

Savannah James First-Class Flight Sparks Debate

Savannah James sparked debate on the internet after discussing her friendship with April McDaniel on a podcast. James explained that she doesn't feel obligated to pay for her friend's first-class flight tickets when traveling together. McDaniel acknowledged they live different lifestyles and isn't delusional about it. The clip divided social media, with some calling James a bad friend while others praised her for not enabling entitlement. Some argued James provides McDaniel with more valuable access to influential people and platforms for building wealth than a first-class ticket could offer.

Tatyana Ali says she did not expect Dancing With the Stars to reopen a deeply personal chapter of her life—but it did.

In a new message to fans, Ali explained that the experience brought “this part of my story” back to the surface, and that the comments and DMs she received made her feel she needed to speak more openly about it.

The story she is referring to is her difficult first childbirth in 2016, which she has described as an experience of obstetric violence. Ali has said her birth plan was ignored, that she was physically restrained during delivery, and that she was left feeling terrified and unheard in a chaotic hospital environment. She later connected that experience to the broader crisis facing Black and Indigenous mothers in maternal healthcare.

For Ali, the feelings are not about performance or nostalgia. They are about being seen, believed, and supported after an experience that once made her feel powerless. She has said that healing led her toward advocacy, including support for midwives, doulas, and birth workers who can help protect mothers—especially women of color—during some of the most vulnerable moments of their lives.

Her openness also explains why fans’ messages mattered so much. Ali said reading their comments and DMs made her realize that her story was still resonating with other women who may have carried similar pain quietly.

This is not simply a celebrity reflecting on a hard memory. It is a mother, advocate, and survivor choosing vulnerability in public—because she knows that speaking honestly can help someone else feel less alone. by @blkcosmo
