how far do you need to go for a lie to become a truth?

This intoxicating documentary by twice Oscar-nominated director Maite Alberdi attempts to untangle the bizarre story of a young woman’s fake pregnancy and subsequent baby kidnapping. With true delicacy and curiosity, Alberdi builds Alejandra’s fragile, pink-tinged, emotional world of grief, shame, and impossible expectations. What stories do we tell ourselves and how do they conflict with the narratives that actually unfold?

the best doc of the year

When three American doctors, Palestinian, Jewish, and Zoroastrian, enter Gaza to save lives, they find themselves caught between medicine and politics, risking everything to expose the truth. Critical viewing, this film is unflinching in its decision to show us exactly how ravaged a war zone is.

Limited theatrical release beginning August 2026.

a stunning doc

As climate change continues to wreak havoc and erase the Louisiana coast, the last two teenagers on Isle de Jean Charles fight to stay on an island that’s been their family home for generations. How is it possible to find joy in the face of disaster?

a doc that will leave you breathless

I saw this film at the Vancouver Film Festival and the large screen in the theater setting immersed us deep into the depths with Jessea, her superhuman athleticism, and her turbulent emotional world. This is much more basic portrait of an athlete; the director becomes entangled with her subject, the free diving feats are at times gut wrenching to watch, and the pursuit of perfection is almost too much to bear. Don’t blink, but make sure to take a deep, deep breath.

a docuthriller you haven’t seen

I saw this film in 2021 as it was seeking distribution and it has stuck with me ever since. Ahead of its time, it seeks to unravel the mystery of the Chinese scientist who disappeared after using emerging - and illegal - CRISPR technology on unborn embryos to eliminate genetically inherited HIV. Many medical breakthroughs have first been met with outrage, and ultimately the scientist was severely punished. But the question the film asks, and that remains, is: if we have the technology to “make people better,” shouldn’t we use it? Or is man playing god likely to end up in disaster?

a sexy, tragic doc you haven’t seen

As the director and film student Montoya is in process of casting his scripted film about the young ghosts of Medellin who exist alongside the living, the star of his film - who is also his close friend - tragically dies. As the lines of fiction and reality blur, this feature doc captures a vibrant community whose futures in the oppressive and violent city feel elusive but whose aspirations are irrepressible. With exceptional cinematography and truly innovative storytelling choices, watching this film feels like stepping into a world both tantalizing and terrifying…and one that must be protected at all costs.

this doc will change your perspective on democracy

In Uganda’s 2021 presidential election, music star and activist Bobi Wine challenges President Museveni’s oppressive 35-year regime. In a country where corruption floods everyday life, Bobi’s mission becomes even more critical when the regime and military use violence and torture in attempt to silence him and his supporters. It’s necessary to criticize any institution in power, and this powerful film reminds us that fighting for what is right is always a fight worth having…even when the stakes are life and death.

a shocking doc you haven’t seen

As Robert Evans said, there are three sides to every story: your side, my side, and the truth. This film explores them all. This incredibly well-made doc is part thriller, part mystery, and will keep you guessing until the end. Don’t look up spoilers. The resonance of what this film is trying to say exists within the narrative(s) it weaves. Just know, miracles can happen. Sometimes.

an unsettling doc you haven’t seen

This shockingly intimate doc leaves you with a sticky feeling. As David becomes infatuated with a mysterious company’s promise to change his life by permanently changing his eye color, nothing can stop his insistence that everything will be different, better, brighter, happier. But after he undergoes the dangerous procedure he comes face-to-face with the harsh reality that maybe, he didn’t think this through.

a delightful short doc you haven’t seen

Consider this a palate cleanser. Beautifully shot and only 23 minutes, this short doc uses every moment to immerse us into second grader Ayame’s rich emotional world. Selected to play the coveted cymbal in the band, at first her lack of focus leads to countless mistakes and reprimands. As we watch her try and fail and try once again, her humble journey of practice is a gentle reminder that perseverance is a process that can hold as much joy in of itself as the eventual success will bring.

a disturbing doc you haven’t seen

When I first saw this film at the Hamptons Film Festival I was profoundly disturbed, as you will be. A project like this takes the concept of ‘true-crime’ and challenges the extent of our macabre human curiosity to witness real evil as we follow Judy, the first woman to testify at the trial of her own murder. There are no camera tricks. We see the crime occur. We see Judy’s bodily devastation. But more importantly, we see the grueling emotional road of what happens after an act of brutality. How does it affect a family, a community, and ultimately, state legislation? Then, after the film ends, we are forced to consider: what about these terrible and sad stories make us not want to look away?

an unflinching doc you haven’t seen

There is a misconception that long-form video journalism is the same as documentary film. While there is certainly some overlap, a true doc uses the film medium to elevate a narrative into an undeniable piece of moving art. The Cave isn’t “just another war doc” - instead focusing on the deeply human and transcendent soul of Dr. Amani Ballour as she operates a secret hospital, literally underground, during the active Syrian war. Dr. Ballour and her colleagues’ intense sense of duty, steadfast courage, and remarkable resilience force us — especially as Western viewers — to reckon with our own purpose, ambition, and legacy.
