Three months after it ended, I realized I never posted one of my favorite The Avalon Shrek memories, this behind-the-curtain glimpse courtesy of my friend and talented castmate Alex KR. When we started rehearsals I assumed we would record this intro, but it ended up being my favorite nightly ritual. On this World Theater Day, here’s to storytelling with friends and neighbors new and old.

Eight years ago today we lost one of the best, Kevin Kelly. Kevin was one of our originals, joining Island Blossom in 1999, the year Corbin Penwell took the helm. He was a motivator, our “Coach” and our “good-looking” boardman. Kevin very earnestly gave me a book called “Dr. Bob Arnot's Guide to Turning Back the Clock” for men over 40. I was 25 😆 We won nine High Point championships with Kevin. Capsized a lot, too, and shared endless stories and conversations. Through it all, we became family, and it wasn’t long after that first summer that we all stayed close year-round. I miss you, Kevin. #coach #logcanoes #islandblossom taken in Easton, MD by @blossomboardman

iPhones do strange things with celestial objects, but I haven’t seen the Sun this strange in awhile. No filters, just some Western Canada smoke. by @blossomboardman

“I got a Matisse today!” — the script-reference title of the work I’m holding, a small but juicy little beachscape our director @mejclarke10 made for Sagot’s entrance in Picasso at the Lapin Agile. We swapped it for a painting that was easier to pop in and out of its frame, but this thing will hold a wall! And it’ll have a place on mine.

Thank you to Liz, @thefactoryartsproject and crew, @maggiisarfatyfineart and a talented cast of veterans and newcomers alike for including me in this witty Steve Martin classic, and to all who came to experience a night in our bar.

It’s hard lately not to feel like we’ve been cast, by the whims of a few, into a sea of metastasizing AI drivel. Where digital puppetry colonizes more and more of what we scroll and hear, while our devices watch us more closely than we watch them. To me, theater in both definitions — the act and the building — is an antidote. A place and practice to celebrate ephemeral humanity that can never be prompt-generated.

In a world of data center, choose theater.
