Reupholstered my dining room chairs (eight of them). Easiest thing ever: cut squares of new fabric, unscrew seat from chair frame, remove staples holding old fabric, staple new fabric, screw seat back into frame. The chairs aren’t super wonderful but I’m really enjoying the update #upholstery #nosew #chair #refresh #makersgonnamake by @blotchness

Saw a deer on the Tennessee Valley trail. Also baby crab detritus on the beach, and rock formations which speak to me. (They really want to come home with me. Or I want them to). Just finished a spot of reupholstery that gave me fits. Bought the loveseat online and the colour was wildly different from the images - and not in a good way. Since I could easily re-disassemble it, upholstering the separate pieces would have been straightforward except for my fabric having no stretch at all, making the pool-noodle-ish padding of the back insurmountably awkward until I filled it in with foam which I had to cut to shape (tldr: blisters). It’s not my best work (you can see puckering on the arms) but that insipid pink no longer makes my blood boil so I’m counting it as a win #upholstery #velveteen #makeitright #makersgonnamake taken in Vancouver, Washington by @blotchness

Went on a guided forest walk (focus on wild edible berries. Snowberries are strictly for the birds by the way) last week and now I’m no longer a huckleberry virgin. Working on the assumption that some people (like me for example) may not be acquainted with these, they are about the size of giant peppercorns or juniper berries and their taste is what blueberries aspire to #wildberries #forage #huckleberries taken in Vancouver, Washington by @blotchness

I went to pick up the pieces I’d made in the four-week ceramics class I took last month but whoops I missed one (the small white-ish bowl next to the kinda golden one in the second last picture) which I’ll pick up next week. I had such fun experimenting with glazes, layering colours, dipping pieces versus painting the glazes on, just to see what would happen. My errrr note-taking was insufficient to say the least! The curvy charcuterie platter was really fun to make (I used the pinkish-looking glaze just behind the small spotty bowl in the third picture which yes, turned out kinda blue-green!), but the buttons from the offcuts were a little fiddly and I probably made them too thin because one broke but still! Spent two days spinning in the sheep barn at the county fair and had the best shake I can remember (to be fair I can’t remember when last that was): fresh dairy blended with local berries and a splash of buttermilk. Not that I’m obsessing over its luciousness or anything but hot damn it was good. Every time I walked through the cow barn there was a teenager snuggled up to a cow; they both seemed to like it. The llamas were stand-offish, the alpacas shy, the sheep opinionated and no doubt the goats were a handful. I had a fascinating conversation with a trio of blacksmiths and was sorely tempted by some Senegalese mud cloth #clarkcountyfair #countyfair #livestock #spinninginpublic taken in Clark County Fair by @blotchness

The Vancouver (Washington, not British Columbia) Arts and Music Festival includes performances by the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra on Friday, Saturday and Sunday evenings of the festival weekend. Friday night was fabulous, even partially obscured by a large tree, but today’s performance was stellar: it featured Pinchas Zukerman, who I’ve seen once before only: in 1982 at the Mann Auditorium, with Isaac Stern, Yizhak Perlman and Shlomo Mintz, performing among other pieces, Vivaldi’s Four Seasons over a few evenings. I was in grad school so a few of us split the tickets for the series. If that was a once in a lifetime experience, then what are the odds of a concert with a world-acclaimed violinist at a free concert in the park of a quiet little town in the Pacific Northwest? #classicalmusicians #violinist #concertinthepark #vancouverwa #artandmusicfestival taken in Esther Short Park by @blotchness

My pottery class series wound down with the last open studio session, and all that was left today was glazing. I had already glazed (but not yet had fired) a couple-few pieces during the last formal class. I’ve been reading about glazes and my takeaway was that I might as well try all the glazes available to me (about ten or so) and mix and match with abandon since some glazes might react with others in unexpected (to me) ways when layered or adjacent so I striped and layered and splattered and accented until I ran out of colours and bowls #playwithcolors #wheelthrownceramic #thrownpottery #glazing #makersgonnamake taken in Kilnfolk by @blotchness

Three-quarters of the way through a four-week ceramics class and this is what I made in week three. The first two weeks were on the wheel. I started off pretty slowly (probably over-confidently) as I’d already done a two-hour class which produced two small bowls, but let’s just say I’m going to be spending all my time in the last week doing glazing. I’m not mad at it. This third week introduced us to building with slabs, and this wild wavy platter was inspired by a photo one of my classmates shared with me. I’m happy with my progress but I still don’t have the control I would like - I’m at the point where I’m happy to not have to throw my efforts into the reclaim bin, so the bar is still low #ceramics #pottery #potterywheel #learningnewthings #makersgonnamake taken in Downtown, Vancouver by @blotchness
