Eastern Phoebe
Wednesday, 9/23/2026 - 3:04pm
In September, Eastern Phoebes in Pennsylvania transition from their breeding grounds to active fall migration, becoming quieter and shifting their diet as they head toward the southeastern United States.

Eastern Gray Squirrel
Tuesday, 9/29/2026 - 5:24pm
They eat palatable white oak acorns right away in the fall because these sprout quickly. They bury (scatter-hoard) bitter red oak acorns individually in shallow holes to eat later during winter scarcity. They bury thousands of nuts in separate locations across their territory and use spatial memory and keen senses to recover about 80% to 95% of them. The unrecovered buried acorns germinate and grow into new oak trees, making squirrels vital forest seed dispensers.

Eastern Gray Squirrel
Wednesday, 9/23/2026 - 6:16pm
Not sure if I was the threat, but this guy was looking at me when he
gave the Kuks alarm call.
The eastern gray squirrel uses three main types of alarm calls—kuks, quaas, and moans—to warn other squirrels and scare away predators.
Kuks: Rapid, sharp, repetitive barks that sound like a tiny dog. They mean "I see danger" or "I am in danger".
Quaas: Raspy, drawn-out sounds similar to a cat's meow or a disgruntled chicken. They are often combined with kuks when a ground predator is near.
Moans: Clear-toned, rising-and-falling sounds used mostly to warn about aerial threats like hawks.

Red-headed Woodpecker
Monday, 9/21/2026 - 2:09pm
In September, Red-headed Woodpeckers are foraging to cache food for the winter. Unlike other woodpeckers, they heavily store acorns, beechnuts, seeds, and even flying insects in tree crevices, old fence posts, or architectural cracks to sustain themselves through colder months.

Black-crowned Night Heron - juvenile
Wednesday, 9/23/2026 - 1:58pm
I hadn't seen one in a few weeks. I thought they had all moved on, but I guess not.
As weather cools and food sources become scarcer, active southward migration peaks through September, with most juveniles completely leaving the state by late October or early November.

Burst Milkweed Pod
Wednesday, 9/23/2026 - 6:30pm
Milkweed pods burst open in late summer and autumn (typically August through October) to release brown seeds attached to silky white floss that carries them away on the wind. A burst milkweed pod is botanically called a follicle, and the fluffy white material inside is known as silk, floss, or pappus. The wind catches the fluff and carries the seeds far away.

Lesser Yellowlegs
Friday, 9/18/2026 - 5:56pm
Quite a few different types of shore birds migrating through today. Since the "shore" on the lake side, is so far away from
the road, I couldn't get any shots of the really small birds.
