Bhavani Temple, Upper Bhavani , Nilgiris 🌿🏔️

Hidden deep within the shola forests of the Nilgiris, the Bhavani Amman Temple stands as a timeless symbol of nature, and heritage. Believed to have been worshipped by indigenous tribes centuries ago, this temple continues to hold deep spiritual and cultural significance.

Surrounded by mist, silence, and untouched wilderness, many locals consider this place a sacred spot.

Flowing gently behind the temple is a pristine stream, one of the key sources feeding the Upper Bhavani Dam — and part of the origin of the sacred Bhavani River, which later merges with the mighty Cauvery.

Also known as the Lakshmi Temple, this serene shrine comes alive especially during New Moon days, when devotees gather in devotion amidst nature’s raw beauty.

⚠️ Located inside the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve — prior forest permission is mandatory, and private vehicles are not allowed.

A place where spirituality meets wilderness… truly the soul of the Nilgiris.

RANGASAMY PEAK | EXPLORING THE NILGIRIS ⛰️🌿

Standing high above the surrounding valleys, Rangasamy Peak offers a spectacular panorama of the Nilgiri Mountains, the Moyar region, and the distant plains of Tamil Nadu.

On a clear day, the landscape reveals a breathtaking combination of mountain ridges, deep valleys, winding rivers, dense forests, and distant settlements.

💧 BHAVANISAGAR RESERVOIR & DAM

Far below, the Bhavanisagar Reservoir forms a remarkable feature of the landscape. This vast water body is an important part of the region’s water resources and adds to the scenic beauty of the surrounding countryside.

🌿 THE MOYAR RIVER & FOREST LANDSCAPES

The Moyar River winds through the rugged valleys below, carving its way through a landscape shaped by mountains, forests, and flowing water.

Beyond the Nilgiri slopes lie the extensive forests of the Sigur Plateau and the Sathyamangalam region. These ecologically important landscapes support diverse wildlife and form part of the wider Western Ghats ecosystem.

🏞️ THE DISTANT TOWNS & LANDMARKS

Depending on weather conditions, visibility, and the direction of the viewpoint, the surrounding panorama may extend towards places such as Sathyamangalam, Puliampatti, Sirumugai, Odhimalai, Thalavadi, Dhimbam, and Kodiveri.

Kallambalayam Village is another landmark to look for among the surrounding valleys.

The scenery reveals layer upon layer of mountain ridges, forest-covered slopes, agricultural landscapes, and distant plains—a striking reminder of how the Nilgiris connect with the wider geographical landscape of Tamil Nadu.

🌄 THE BEAUTY OF RANGASAMY PEAK

For me, exploring places like Rangasamy Peak is not simply about reaching a summit or adding another peak to a list.

It’s about understanding the landscape, appreciating its biodiversity, learning about its cultural heritage, and discovering the geographical features that make the Nilgiris so extraordinary.

Every ridge tells a story. Every valley offers a different perspective. And every exploration deepens our understanding of these remarkable mountains.

The Nilgiris No One Ever Told You About. 🏔️

These are not the Ooty and the Nilgiris you see today.

These photographs are part of my personal collection, captured over many years of exploring the mountains. Some are old photographs, some from places that have changed considerably, and some preserve landscapes and moments that may no longer look the same.

This is the original Ooty — Ooty when Ooty was truly Ooty. A quieter, greener, more beautiful Nilgiris, before the crowds, concrete, traffic and rapid changes transformed much of the landscape.

I’m deliberately not mentioning the names or exact locations. These pictures are not meant to reveal places, but to preserve memories — to show a side of the Nilgiris that many may never have seen.

Every frame carries a story, a journey and a memory from years of exploring these mountains.

This is the Nilgiris as I remember them.
The Nilgiris I explored.
The Nilgiris before they changed. 💚📷

180° McIver, Coonoor — 143 Years of History 🏡🌿

Perched on the slopes of Coonoor, overlooking the beautiful Nilgiri hills, stands 180° McIver, a remarkable colonial-era heritage bungalow.

The historical references trace the property to around 1875 and associate it with Mr. McIvor, who is said to have been connected with the development of the famous Botanical Gardens at Ooty.

The bungalow reflects the character of old colonial Coonoor, with wooden floors, antique furnishings, spacious interiors, manicured lawns and beautiful mountain views. Its elevated setting offers a spectacular panorama of Coonoor and the surrounding Nilgiris — giving rise to the name 180° McIver.

Located around Orange Grove Road, Gray’s Hill, close to historic Sim’s Park, McIver stands as a reminder of the period when Coonoor was developing as an important hill station, attracting British administrators, tea planters and other residents to the cool climate of the Nilgiris.

🎬 McIver also has a special connection with Indian cinema.

The bungalow was featured as the Kapoor family home in the 2016 Bollywood film Kapoor & Sons, starring Rishi Kapoor, Fawad Khan, Sidharth Malhotra and Alia Bhatt. Its beautiful architecture, gardens and Coonoor landscape became an important part of the film’s visual identity.

The property has also been associated with Sam Bahadur, adding another chapter to its cinematic history.

Today, McIver continues as a heritage-style hospitality property and is home to La Belle Vie, its French restaurant.

But beyond the movies and modern hospitality, McIver represents something much more important — a surviving piece of old Coonoor.

For more than a century, it has witnessed the transformation of the Nilgiris from a quiet colonial hill station into the Coonoor we know today.

A 145 year-old bungalow, a piece of Nilgiri heritage, and a familiar face from Bollywood — 180° McIver continues to overlook the Blue Mountains. 💚🏔️

Geddai Valley from the Mountaintop 🏔️🌿

A breathtaking view overlooking Geddai village and the valley below, with the Geddai Dam nestled among the beautiful rolling hills and ridge lines of the Nilgiris.

From this viewpoint, you can also see the winding road connecting Manjoor towards Karamadai via Geddai, Mulli, Velliangadu. The route is known for its 43 hairpin bends, winding through a landscape where the mountains gradually give way to the forests and valleys below.

This is also a road where wildlife movement is an important consideration. The Geddai–Manjoor region is part of an elephant movement corridor, and restrictions on through traffic have historically been maintained to reduce disturbance to wildlife. The road remains particularly important for local communities, including people from Manjoor and surrounding areas, connecting the hill settlements with the plains towards Mettupalayam and Coimbatore.

A glimpse into Geddai’s history

Geddai also carries a tragic history. On 25 October 1990, a major cloudburst in the Nilgiris triggered a devastating landslide at Geddai, with reports recording that more than 35 families were buried.

Today, standing above this valley and looking across its mountains, forests, dam and settlements offers a quiet reminder of both the beauty and the powerful forces of nature that have shaped the Nilgiris.

And as the evening arrives, the mountains glow beneath the setting sun — a beautiful end to the day in Geddai. 🌅💚

🌍 World Tourism Day 2026 | Kodanad, Nilgiris

Kodanad is one of those beautiful places in the Nilgiris where the journey itself becomes part of the experience. From this spectacular viewpoint, the landscape opens up towards Thengumarada, the Moyar River and the surrounding valleys, with views extending towards Karnataka on a clear day. The combination of mountains, forests and valleys makes Kodanad a wonderful place to experience the natural beauty of the Nilgiris. 🏔️🌿

On World Tourism Day, while celebrating the beauty of places like Kodanad, I also feel it is important to speak about responsible and sustainable tourism.

Tourism in the Nilgiris has grown tremendously, and many popular destinations are now frequently overcrowded. Managing visitor numbers is important, but tourism management should also focus on the basic needs of the people who visit.

🚻 Clean and adequate toilets, especially facilities that are safe and convenient for women, are essential at every major tourist destination.

💧 Safe drinking water should be available.

🍽️ Food hygiene and quality need better attention. I often hear visitors complain about the quality and cleanliness of food at tourist destinations. Government facilities should maintain proper standards, and private establishments serving tourists should also be regularly monitored.

🚗 Parking is another major issue at many tourist spots and needs proper planning rather than allowing vehicles to create congestion.

♻️ Waste management and littering are equally important. Visitors must be clearly advised not to throw plastic, food waste or other rubbish. Shops and restaurants can also play a role by reminding customers to dispose of waste responsibly. At the same time, there should be regular monitoring and prompt cleaning of tourist areas.

On this World Tourism Day, my request is simple: let us develop tourism in a way that provides visitors with basic facilities and a good experience, while also protecting the very environment that brings people here.

Explore. Enjoy. Respect. Preserve. 🌿

The Nilgiris Through Time — Ooty, Coonoor & Beyond 🖤

A glimpse into the past through a collection of old photographs capturing the people, places, buildings, railways and landscapes that have shaped the Nilgiris.

From the Sacred Heart Cathedral of Ooty and the Coonoor Post Office, to the Black Bridge at Wellington, Ooty Market, Charing Cross and the Government Botanical Garden — these photographs offer a window into an earlier era of the hills.

Also featured are the suspension bridge at Kallar, Ketti Railway Station, the Pykara Dam Bridge, Coonoor Railway Station, All Saints’ Church, Coonoor, and Ooty Railway Station.

There are glimpses of the Madras Regimental Centre, St. Stephen’s Church, and the historic Fernhill Palace, where Maharajas and British guests were once photographed enjoying a feast.

Another fascinating image is of Thirupurasundari Villas on Commercial Road, which once served as a hotel, boarding and lodging house. The building stands behind the newer structures today; Nedungadi Bank once operated here.

The collection also includes a steam locomotive of the Nilgiri Mountain Railway, with workers loading coal into the tender — a reminder of the hard work behind the railway that connected these mountain towns.

At the heart of old Ooty was the main circle, surrounded by important landmarks such as the SBI, LIC, Nilgiri Library, Shinkows , Collectorate, Police Station and other institutions that formed the town’s historic centre.

And finally, a beautiful old view of St. Thomas Church overlooking Ooty Lake.

These are more than just old black-and-white photographs. They are fragments of the Nilgiris’ memory — a record of architecture, transport, institutions, everyday life and landscapes that continue to evolve.

Ooty and Coonoor may have changed, but these photographs allow us to pause for a moment and see the hills as they once were.

🚂 The Nilgiri Mountain Railway — a railway through the mountains.

Dating back to the 19th century, this remarkable 46-km heritage railway climbs from Mettupalayam to Udhagamandalam (Ooty), rising from around 326 metres to 2,203 metres above sea level. Its unique rack-and-pinion system helps the train negotiate the steep mountain gradients, making it one of the most remarkable mountain railways in the world. It was inscribed as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Mountain Railways of India. (UNESCO World Heritage Centre)

And one thing I would like to emphasize: please don’t call this a “toy train.” This is the Nilgiri Mountain Railway passenger train — a historic, working mountain railway that continues to serve passengers between Mettupalayam and Ooty.

From the plains, it climbs deep into the Nilgiris, winding around the mountains, crossing bridges and viaducts, passing through forests and disappearing into tunnels before emerging again into the breathtaking mountain landscape.

Mettupalayam is also connected to Chennai by the Nilgiri Express, making this historic mountain journey part of a larger rail connection from Chennai to the Nilgiris. (UNESCO World Heritage Centre)

So, the next time you see this train crawling through the mountains, remember — this isn’t a toy. This is the Nilgiri Mountain Railway. 💚🚂⛰️

Have you ever experienced this incredible journey? Tell me in the comments.

Ketti valley / Valley view from the heights 🏔️🌿

This is how Ooty and the surrounding Nilgiri landscape look from high above. This view was captured from around 100 metres below Doddabetta Peak, at an elevation of roughly 2,500 metres above sea level.

What is Ketti Valley / valley view actually?
A vast and incredibly beautiful valley nestled at around 7,000 feet (2,130 m) in the Nilgiri Hills. It is surrounded by rolling mountains and is home to tea plantations, terraced farms and traditional villages, including settlements of indigenous communities.

From up here, you get a completely different perspective of the valley—the landscape, agriculture and settlements all coming together as one magnificent panorama. 🌿💚

But there is another side to this beautiful landscape.

I first visited and explored these areas around 15 years ago, when I was much younger, and I’ve personally seen how much the valley has changed over the years. Today, there are considerably more houses, cottages and other constructions, many of them coming up for commercial purposes. Along with this development, much of the natural vegetation and forest cover has also been lost.

I often wonder what Ketti Valley/ valley view will look like another 10 or 15 years from now.

Yet, standing here today, I’m simply taking in the view. 🏔️🌿 Despite all the changes, the valley remains breathtaking, and for this moment, I just want to appreciate the landscape in front of me.

I’m not here to judge every construction or development — I’m simply sharing what I see and remembering how different this landscape was when I first knew it.

The complete story of Ketti Valley/ valley view its landscape, changes and what makes this valley so special will be covered in my next reel. 🌿

The Nilgiris are more than just Ooty. Look beyond the town, and you discover an entire world shaped by mountains, people and nature.
