Recorded yesterday at HOTA on the Gold Coast
Dickens considered taking his public readings to Australia in 1862 followed by a book with the title ‘The Uncommercial Traveller Down Under’ but it was not to be. Although several ‘baddies’ were transported there! Celebrating #OscarWilde’s 170th birthday today in #London:

In the morning with a @seniordiscoverytours group at the #MaggiHambling sculpture of Oscar in the West End…

…followed in the afternoon by the unveiling, in Chelsea, of a new sculpture of Oscar by the late Sir #EduardoPaolozzi.
🎭
The inimitable @gylesbrandreth hosted the unveiling, observing how the two sculptures link the two areas of London so key in Oscar’s life.

Thrilling to be there with members of the #OscarWildeSociety & fellow #BlueBadgeGuide Steph Tickner, and how wonderful to see such a marvellous crowd to welcome this new tribute to Oscar on his birthday!

On a recent Theatreland walk with theatre aficionados @carrieschnelker & friends, we had a delightful encounter with Paul, one London's fabled @london_lamplighters. There are still approximately 1500 gas lamps that shine brightly in & around London's West End. The introduction of gas lighting transformed life in London in the 19th century, and the lamplighters carry on a great tradition to this day.

Oscar Fingal O’ Flahertie Wills Wilde was born today, 16 October, in 1854.
Following a lecture I gave last week, the lovely members of The Arts Society Woodford Green joined me today in a birthday celebration of the London life of this extraordinary poet, dramatist & wit. Here we are ‘all in the gutter but looking at our star’ gathered around Maggi Hambling’s wonderful 1998 sculpture entitled "A Conversation With Oscar Wilde" at the entrance to the West End. Happy Birthday, dear Oscar. Your ‘importance’ grows year on year...
