After the bitter coldest -40 C prairie nights spent with family, in the morning we woke to the most beautiful frost painted by the night. Frost amazes me, every year, these artworks etched by air and water. These panes, made beautiful by such unbearable and impossible cold, made me think of this past year in some ways. I hope this next year is like that for all of us. Despite hard days, may there be so much good to look forward to, as well. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

In these strange days when a walk for groceries is a quiet adventure, these trees on my street took my breath away. I looked up and pink petals were fluttering down, all around, like a dream that belonged to a time before this quarantine. I don’t mind these work-from-home days, I’m used to the ‘new normal’, but to see these blooming beauties and feel my heart lift was truly a breath of life that I needed. Spring is coming, hopeful and soft, and I can’t wait❤️ What is giving you hope and life these days? •

Flowers really do feel like a visual symphony, especially after a long winter. The flowers on the trees in my neighbourhood have felt especially hopeful these days, and inspire me to capture that feeling in these flower pieces I make of silk and pearls. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ •

This weekend feels like renewal to me—for Easter, for Passover, for spring, and for creating the best lives we can, even though nothing is quite like it was, and we don’t know what’s to come. But the sky is brilliant today, and green is coming back outside my window. I remember how English ivy overflowed from atop pianos in Covent Garden where I was in London, last spring. Last time I was in Paris I climbed the towers and took this photo of the 19th century spire and the 12th century lead roof that fell today. The bells rang and I could feel them in my chest. Human history and art is infused in all areas of my career and today was a physically painful day watching her burn and fearing the whole cathedral would be gone. We thought these places would last forever. But thankfully it was mostly the roof. A beautiful roof built of wood from the 1100s, but it can be built again. The rest, the inside, the walls, in pretty good shape. And so while there is so much sadness, I feel so much hope. Because it’s been a long time since we’ve called for stone carvers and stain glass artisans to complete a cathedral (thought hopefully the windows are ok). Historic art skills are needed again. And just as it took hundreds of people to build this church the first time, thousands if not millions of people will be part of restoring her now. We focus on how divided or unsettling the world and politics are today. But I think global heritage and almost losing a piece of it today will be a beautiful opportunity to unite and to bring people together. Total catastrophe was not what we saw today, instead global love, resilience, and connection to a place that is spiritual for some, awesome to others, and recognized as a precious feat of human achievement for human kind. I feel deep reverence for places like this, and hope for what will come from this. •
