About the appointment Sze says: “It’s a recognition that belongs to teachers, librarians, editors, poets, readers – everyone who works tirelessly on behalf of poetry. As laureate I feel a great responsibility to promote the ways poetry, especially poetry in translation, can impact our daily lives. We live in such a fast-paced world: poetry helps us slow down, deepen our attention, connect and live more fully.”

Join us for a reading and a conversation this Sunday June 7 from 4:00-5:30 with the 2026 Chapbook Competition winner Laura Candler, hosted by our contest judge, poet and essayist Aimee Nezhukumatathil.

Thrilled to welcome Juliana Spahr to Blue Flower Arts! Spahr is the author of “Ars Poeticas” - which won the 2026 Pulitzer Prize in Poetry - among many other books.

As the Pulitzer jury puts it: “In the six ars poeticas that Spahr writes, she sings of the dark times but also of coral, the pop song’s possible liberation, and the love of comrades. Nothing quite like being in community on a sunny day listening to brilliant people - @sunyungshin and @lesliebarlowartist - talk about their gift of a book, Revolutions are Made of Love! Our hearts are FULL. And we are energized to continue building community and sharing LGBTQIA+ and gender affirming books are part of this “revolution made of love”.

We had a magical evening last night at the Library of Congress in Washington DC celebrating poetry, libraries, translation, and cross cultural connections with two beloved Blue Flower Arts poets, US Poet Laureate Arthur Sze and UK Poet Laureate Simon Armitage.

Arthur shared his laureate project, “Transient Worlds: On Translating Poetry,” published by our friends @copper_canyon_press and Simon read from his new translation of the ancient epic “Gilgamesh,” commissioned by @w.w.norton

While Simon heads home today, Arthur’s work continues this morning: he’s teaming up with fellow BFA poet @kimiko.hahn to train graduate students from Queens College who will lead translation workshops of their own, across the country, in Sze’s second term.

Marie Howe @mariehowe77 invites you to listen to poetry and use your imagination… all are invited to join her for an intimate poetry retreat at @omegainstitute in September!

How can the imagination transform a story we have told ourselves over and over and over? How can we recreate our lives by reimagining the past? How can we create a future we really want but might be afraid to imagine?

Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Marie Howe shares some of her own poems and poems by those who have influenced her, such as William Blake, William Wordsworth, Emily Dickinson, and Rainer Maria Rilke, along with contemporary poets Stanley Kunitz, Carl Philips, Donika Kelly, Lucille Clifton, Brenda Hillman, Mark Doty, and Brigit Pegeen Kelly.

Each day, we have time to read and talk. We have time to generate writing and time to share it. This is a generative space—comfortable, caring, and uncritical. Let’s look at our old stories in new ways. Let’s imagine our way into a vision of reality.

Lena Khalaf Tuffaha is a poet, essayist, and translator. She is the author of three books of poetry: Something About Living (UAkron, 2024), winner of the 2024 National Book Award and winner of the 2022 Akron Prize for Poetry; Kaan & Her Sisters(Trio House Press, 2023), finalist for the 2024 Firecracker Award and honorable mention for the 2024 Arab American Book Award; and Water & Salt(Red Hen, 2017), winner of the 2018 Washington State Book Award and honorable mention for the 2018 Arab American Award. Her writing has appeared in journals including Los Angeles Review of Books, Michigan Quarterly Review, The Nation, Poets.org, Protean, Prairie Schooner, and many others. Tuffaha’s work has also been anthologized widely, including in The Long Devotion (Georgia Press), We Call to the Eye and the Night (Persea Press), and Gaza Unsilenced (Just World Books). She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Comparative Literature from the University of Washington and an MFA from Pacific Lutheran University’s Rainier Writing Workshop. Yesterday I got to share a bit of my next book NOTHING IN PARTICULAR with folks (other than my project advisers) for the very first time, and it was a truly special experience. Every seat in the auditorium was full and people asked really great questions that gave me a lot to think about!

Thank you Morningside University for inviting me to keynote this year’s Palmer Student Research Symposium (an annual day dedicated to supporting undergraduate research) - it was an honor to be the first person from the humanities to give this keynote in the symposium’s 22-year history, and it felt like the perfect place to begin sharing some of the research and thinking I’ve been doing for the last decade (and even earlier).
