We are proud to announce that Bluence has been officially endorsed as a United Nations Ocean Decade Project, under the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development 2021–2030 (“the Ocean Decade”), becoming the second Peru-led project endorsed by the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO.

Our project, “Blue Economy Rooted in Community & Women’s Lead,” is now part of the Ocean Literacy With All global programme, working at the intersection of ocean literacy, community engagement, and women-led blue economy initiatives.

This recognition motivates us to keep building, from coastal communities in Peru and beyond. Stay tuned, more details on the project and how it contributes to the Ocean Decade are coming soon.

For a more just, blue future.

🌊

What is #OceanLiteracy, and why is it important?

To protect the ocean, it is critical to understand and respect it. This is what ocean literacy is all about: it means understanding of the ocean’s influence on us, and of our influence on the ocean.

As part of the Ocean Decade, scientists, educators, artists and more work together to advance ocean literacy across the world.

Led by the @ioc_unesco, the #OceanDecade Programme 'Ocean Literacy with All' hosts over 40 ocean literacy projects worldwide. These include:

🇧🇩 The Bangladesh Centre for Ocean Law and Policy promotes ocean literacy among the coastal communities of Bangladesh. By integrating traditional knowledge with scientific approaches, it aims to equip these communities with the knowledge and tools to engage in sustainable marine resource management, while fostering a deeper, more emotional connection to the ocean.

⛵ 'Aprender Explorando' (@aprenderexplorando_vinsonofa) connects the expeditions of the sailboats 'Vinson of Antarctica' and 'Amundsen' across the Atlantic and the Southern Ocean with educational centers. Aimed at teachers and students aged 9 to 17, it uses the ocean, polar regions and sailing as the central theme to address various educational content.

🔵 Based in Peru with project across the world, @bluence.ocean creates citizen-driven narratives and tools that amplify coastal and river voices, highlighting women-led entrepreneurship. Through accessible, low-code technologies, Bluence ensures open access and broad participation, positioning itself as a platform where local voices and global ocean goals converge under the Ocean Decade.

A few highlights from #NYCW and #UNGA81 🗽

We joined conversations on ocean action, financing, development and community, including an important reminder: #SDG14 (Life Below Water) remains the least funded of all the Sustainable Development Goals, with only around 0.5% to 1.1% of annual ODA going to the ocean.

These are just a few of the people and moments we captured along the way, connecting with the ocean and climate community through @foreignpolicymag, @oceanic.global, @greenlatinos, @ecop_usa, @thenestcampus and @humanimpactsinstitute, and exchanging ideas on blue finance, policy, storytelling and community engagement.

To everyone we met in New York, let’s stay connected. We’ll be reaching out in the coming days 💙

🌊

Today is Marine Protected Areas Day! 🗺️

MPAs are the ocean’s national parks: designated zones where marine life can recover, biodiversity can thrive, and coastal communities can build their futures.

This year, the world reached an important milestone: 10% of the ocean is now officially protected. A reason to celebrate, and a reminder that the global target of 30% by 2030 still requires urgency, political will, and sustained action.

MPAs are more than a conservation tool. They are proof that governance works when communities, science, and policy align.

For a more just, blue future.

Hoy es el Día de las Áreas Marinas Protegidas! 🗺️

An evening of dialogue, art, and blue innovation onboard Peace Boat in New York City, in celebration of World Oceans Day.

Last night, Bluence joined advocates, artists, innovators, and changemakers for The Ocean Gala, an evening dedicated to blue innovation, cross-sector partnerships, and the ocean communities at the center of it all.

Bluence was nominated for the “Peace Boat US Ocean Stewardship Award” in the Ocean Literacy category. The nomination itself is recognition enough.

Thank you to @emilie_mcglone, Executive Director of Peace Boat US, for the invitation and for organizing such a meaningful evening.

For a more just, blue future.

Coastal communities have protected marine ecosystems for generations, building their relationship with the ocean on observation, respect, and reciprocity. Yet that knowledge remains largely absent from the decisions that most affect their waters.

This World Oceans Day, Bluence joins the global conversation around this year’s theme: Reimagine.

For a more just, blue future.

🌊

Two years ago, @sernanp and @rn_mar_tropical_de_grau established one of Peru’s most extraordinary marine protected areas, off the coasts of Piura and Tumbes, where the cold Humboldt Current meets the warm waters of the Tropical Pacific.

Less than 0.1% of Peru’s ocean. Yet one of the top 70 most important places in the world for marine conservation, and a recognized Hope Spot by @mission_blue. Where protection exists, marine life recovers. Studies show protected areas can have 4 to 7 times more fish than unprotected zones.

This ocean is part of our story. Bluence has roots in Peru, and the Mar Tropical de Grau reminds us why this work matters.

For a more just, blue future.

Two ways to fall in love with the ocean.

David Attenborough has spent a lifetime exploring our planet. In his latest book and documentary, he shares one conviction: the more we understand the natural world, the greater our hope of protecting it.

Ocean: Earth's Last Wilderness is available at your local bookstore. I found my copy at @curiousiguana in Frederick, MD, a lovely independent worth visiting. And if you prefer the screen, Ocean with David Attenborough is streaming on NatGeo, Disney+ and Hulu.

Have you watched it yet?

Once you see this, the ocean means something different.

Off the coast of Dana Point, California, recognized as the dolphin and whale watching capital of the world. Southern California is home to nearly half a million dolphins.

That sense of wonder is one of the most powerful forces in ocean conservation. When we fall in love with the ocean, we protect it differently.
