Twenty-five years ago today, on October 1, 2001, the world of horology lost one of its brightest lights: Günter Blümlein. Blümlein was not a watchmaker in the traditional sense. He was something perhaps rarer—a visionary who understood that great watchmaking lives at the intersection of engineering, artistry, history and imagination. His fingerprints are everywhere in modern haute horlogerie. He helped restore IWC and Jaeger-LeCoultre to greatness. And after the fall of the Berlin Wall, he joined Walter Lange in accomplishing something extraordinary: bringing A. Lange & Söhne back to life. Their resurrection of Lange was more than the revival of a historic name. It restored a great German watchmaking tradition and, with the introduction of the first four modern Lange watches in 1994, changed the landscape of fine watchmaking forever. Blümlein died far too young, at just 58. But twenty-five years later, his vision lives on—in the manufactures he shaped, the watches he inspired, and in the standards of excellence he refused to compromise. For those of us who love A. The Lange 1A ref. 112.021 In 1998, A. Lange & Sohne completed their first new manfacturé building in Glaschǔtte with the typically Germanic, prosaic name of “1A”. To commemorate this occasion, they designed and released a new version of the Lange 1 in 100 pieces: the Lange 1A. It is a watch of many firsts for Lange: the first limited special edition Lange 1, the very first guilloché dial for the brand, the first solid gold dial, the first gold gilded date disk. And the yellow gold doesn’t end with the dial or case: the balance and escape wheel cocks are also solid yellow gold. Pure gold but for the blued seconds hand, a wonderful and subtle contrast. This is a stunning piece. Resplendent in gold, yet refined, understated, brilliantly detailed. Simply beautiful. by @blumleination

The Lange Zeitwerk ref. 140.035 No watchmaker will likely ever release a more unique, innovative, ground-breaking reference than Lange’s Zeitwerk “Luminous” a.k.a. “The Phantom”. Nor will they release a more risky, controversial, or polarizing a piece. But further, they will likely never release a new piece that so defines their high horology brand and becomes a pillar and icon of the house, as does “The Phantom”. Released in 2010 just one year after the introduction of the first Zeitwerk, the “Luminous” also became the foundation for the entire “Lumen” collection now working its way through the entire Lange family of watches.
