Memoriam.
I was 11 years old in the 5th grade on that morning. My mom came to get me out of school and told me what was happening, I didnt believe her. What 11 year old could comprehend a situation like that? We got home, and I just remember seeing it unfold on t.v. The first tower burning, the second plane hitting before my eyes. The towers falling. Im not even sure exactly how I felt, scared maybe? In disbelief at the very least. Not really able to understand how the whole world- especially the united states- was about to be utterly flipped on its head. How the next quarter century would be shaped by one fated September day.

The 2nd frame and on were all pictures taken by my mother on a subsequent NYC trip we took as a family. I cant remember the exact date but im pretty sure most of them were from the following year. You can see the pit and the construction newly taking shape. I wasnt a shutter bug back then but im really grateful she always had her camera on her and documented everything.

One memory that stood out and changed my heart forever was when I saw a man standing by the ground zero site. He was alone where he stood, but he gazed on and sobbed with all of his soul. Immediately it struck that someone he cared about didnt make it out of there. And I think that I could really feel his sadness just by being in his proximity. Something i dont think i ever understood until that moment. I wont ever forget that. Or what happened that day.

I constructed a mini monument representing the towers out of river rock at one of my favorite trails in remembrance.

I think that new feeling comes eventually. Maybe it doesn't happen in a day or two like you hope it will, or like you feel it needs to. And you might even fall back down not long after you stand up. Probably several times and maybe twice as hard. But the seed gets planted over time whether by a few crucial moments, or hundreds of small twists and turns that hardly seem significant at the time.
