This week, my heart has been ripped out of my chest.

I received a devastating phone call from my coworkers and friends in Nashville: Avanya Moore-Harris, one of my students, was killed…

During my time with the Nashville Freedom School Partnership, Avanya and I built a bond that meant more to me than he may have known. He was a little standoffish at first. But I kept showing up, and in time, he let me in. I saw a young Black boy who loved his family, who was searching for identity and purpose, and who was trying to find his way through the pressures of life. He was still becoming. He deserved the chance to keep becoming.

I have always believed that if God allows me to do one thing for the rest of my life, I want it to be this: to remind EVERY child, until they believe it deep in their soul, “I AM SOMEBODY.”

Now, y’all know me… any chance I get, I’m going to put on a suit. And I do that intentionally. I want these young cats watching me to see themselves in places they may not have imagined they could go.

Avanya would admire my suits when he saw me in person or on social media. So I gave him his first one.

And he wore that suit proudly. It could be a thousand degrees outside, and Avanya was still going to put it on. LOL

And just like that, Black children deserve to be seen. Black children deserve to be loved. Black children deserve to be mentored, prepared, and equipped. Black children deserve somebody who will stay beside them while they discover who God created them to be. Black children deserve to live.

May Avanya’s life be a clarion call to us all to invest in our children, speak life over them, make room for their questions, their dreams, and their becoming. Show them, through what we do and not only what we say, that they are somebody.

Avanya, I thank God for the time we shared. Thank you for trusting me and my team at the Nashville Freedom School Partnership enough to let us mentor you and love you. Giving you that suit was a joy, but the greater gift was getting to know you.

I will carry your memory with me. And I will keep doing my best to make sure the children coming behind you hear the words I wanted you to know: “I Am Somebody.” taken in Nashville, Tennessee by @blwooley

Tonight was my first time experiencing a rage room, and I walked away realizing something: even the strongest soldiers need an outlet. Sometimes we carry so much—responsibilities, expectations, pressure, disappointment, frustration—and we become so accustomed to being strong that we forget we’re human too. Tonight gave me permission to release. To break some things instead of allowing what I’ve been carrying to break me. To let go of some weight I didn’t realize had gotten so heavy.

Strength isn’t always about how much you can carry. Sometimes, strength is knowing when it’s time to put some things down.

Tonight, I released. And I needed that. #youarestrongerthanyouthink by @blwooley

Rev. G. V. Clark once said, “The 4th of July is NOT a day of celebration for me… it’s a joke.”

Those words challenge us to ask: Freedom for whom? While America celebrates independence, we must remember that on July 4, 1776, millions of Black folk were still enslaved…. We honor the ideals of freedom by telling the truth about our history and continuing the work of justice.

Freedom isn’t complete until it’s shared by all. ✊🏾🇺🇸 by @blwooley
