Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979), directed by Werner Herzog, revisits F. W. Murnau’s 1922 silent film while restoring the character names from Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Klaus Kinski plays Count Dracula with the bald head, pale skin, pointed ears and rat-like features associated with Max Schreck’s original vampire.Bruno Ganz appears as Jonathan Harker, who travels to Transylvania to arrange the Count’s purchase of a house, while Isabelle Adjani plays Lucy Harker. Herzog presents Dracula as a lonely and exhausted figure, but the danger surrounding him remains clear. His arrival brings thousands of rats, spreading plague and disorder through the town.The film was shot in locations including Delft, Lübeck and parts of Czechoslovakia, with music by the German group Popol Vuh.
