We’re excited to welcome the @ashleyhuttonmusic Quartet to Cut Time this week! @bris.international.jazz.fest month has truly been good to us 🥳 The saxophonist behind the Primetime Sextet, Ash recently returned from three months at New York’s Tribeca Jazz Institute. With a deep love for the tradition, community, he brings plenty of swing, warmth, generosity and a voice of his own to the bandstand. Come down for a listen, bring your instrument, voice, dog, and join us for some music together! This Friday, 630-930pm, at @theburrowwestend ❤️‍🔥 by @bnejazzguide
On Saturday 24 October, @__oscarjn and I are bringing our debut album, “Bright Phantoms”, to Meanjin as part of the 2026 @bris.international.jazz.fest at @jazzmusicinstitute featuring special guests @james.marcus.sherlock and Carl Harvoe. “Bright Phantoms” is the debut album from Naarm-based experimental duo Lillian Albazi and Oscar Neyland, bringing voice and double bass together in a restless, richly textured sound world. Drawing on post-punk, folk, modern classical, noise, free improvisation and rock, the album explores memory, impermanence, loss and friendship through layered harmonies, dissonance, extended techniques and found sound. The project began in 2021 with an experimental recording of Rowland S. Howard’s “Autoluminescent”, originally released as the closing track of Albazi’s debut album “After-Image”. Six years of recording, experimentation and reflection followed, with the project evolving beyond its original duo format into a broader sonic landscape. Recorded by @pattelfer, the album features contributions from @james.marcus.sherlock @nirantrumpet @elliotlambmusic and @natashafearnside_clarinetist, alongside poetry, analogue manipulation and found percussion. Shaped by a shared love of the sea, the loss of friends and the shifting landscapes of life, “Bright Phantoms” is a slow burning, meditative and powerful record born from patience, friendship and the enduring possibility of making something together. SPECIAL GUEST: JAMES SHERLOCK Opening the evening with a rare solo set, acclaimed Australian jazz guitarist and composer James Sherlock brings more than three decades of experience, having performed internationally and collaborated with artists including Sheila Jordan, Kurt Elling, Kristin Berardi, Paul Grabowsky and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra. James will then join “Bright Phantoms” alongside Carl Harvoe on trumpet for a special expanded album preview performance. LPs and CDs will be for sale at the launch. GIG DETAILS
