Not sorry for a long post - Ten years ago this week, Canada came together for one last concert with The Tragically Hip.

Like so many Canadians, I wish it hadn’t been their last. I wish Gord Downie were still with us, still writing, still singing, still telling our stories.There is something particularly meaningful about remembering that night today.

Last night, Canada walked away from a trade deal rather than accept terms that challenged our economic interests, our independence and our sovereignty. Whatever comes next won’t necessarily be easy. There will be uncertainty, difficult choices and a need to rethink some of the assumptions we’ve held about our economy and our place in the world.

But maybe this is also an opportunity.

The Tragically Hip had a remarkable ability to tell Canadian stories without ever needing to shout about being Canadian. They sang about our towns, our history, our people, our contradictions and the enormous country that connects us from coast to coast to coast.

Ten years ago, they brought millions of us together. We needed them again to bring us together after last night…we need a little of that spirit again. Thank you @cbc for being this night back to us…and for helping us remember what @thetragicallyhip means to 🇨🇦 🍁

Not anger. Not division. Not Canada defined by who we are against.

A confidence in who we are — and in what we can build together.

This moment should challenge us to build a stronger, more ambitious and more self-reliant Canada: strengthen our relationships around the world and take advantage of everything this extraordinary country has to offer.

We wish Gord were still here. We wish that night in Kingston hadn’t been the last.

But ten years later, perhaps one of the best ways to honour what The Hip gave us is to remember how it felt when the whole country seemed connected by the same music and the same stories.

Canada has some important choices ahead.

Friends join us and Ovarian Cancer Canada at our annual little fundraiser that has helped raise serious money for ovarian cancer research in Canada. Come to the event that the The Hill Times called one of the must attend events in Ottawa. And the only fundraiser that has a DJ and a dance floor.

Cape Breton, and all of Nova Scotia lost a legend. Yes he loved Cape Breton, and represented us with passion, humour and humility. He was also a proud Nova Scotian. Alfie was a mentor and more importantly a friend. He helped me in so many ways, so many different times through my time in politics and beyond. His advice was always welcomed, and always bang on. Even when I haven’t seen him in some time it was a quick hello and it was like being back in the old days. He made everyone feel welcome…even the opposition ;). We will miss you my friend! Epic day of playing against NHL Alumni and supporting @sghottawa and the important work they do to end homelessness in Ottawa. Thank you, @gileadsciences for the support and matching funds, and of course @tcenergy for letting this pylon be part of your team and @chrismccluskey19 for his leadership. @hockeyhelpsca - looking forward to many tournaments in the future by @bobby_s773
