afrokiz bangkok | day 3 — the social

i think one of the things i enjoy most about photographing socials is how little attention people pay to the camera once they're really enjoying a dance.

which is great for me, because that's usually when the interesting stuff happens.

the little smiles, the concentration, the occasional burst of laughter, and all those expressions that last for barely a second.

anyway, here's what i saw while wandering around the dance floor that night.

afrokiz bangkok | day 3 — things escalated 😂

i'm not entirely sure at what point the room collectively decided to abandon all seriousness.

but i'm very glad it happened.

there was dancing, there was cheering, there were some very committed facial expressions, and at least a few moments that probably make absolutely no sense without context.

then again, do they really need to?

afrokiz bangkok | day 3 — artist demos

one thing i love about these demos is how much of each artist's personality comes through in their dancing.

some are playful, some are incredibly smooth, some have you wondering how their feet are even doing that.

and then there are those little unexpected moments that get the whole room laughing or cheering.

it's also quite entertaining trying to keep up with all of it from behind the camera. 😂

afrokiz bangkok | day 3 ☀️

day three, and somehow everyone still had energy to spare.

a little more learning, a lot more dancing, people trying out what they'd just picked up in workshops, and plenty of laughter when things didn't quite go as planned.

i quite like how the afternoons move between figuring things out and just enjoying a good dance.

a few familiar faces, a few new ones, and some lovely little moments along the way.

afrokiz bangkok | day 2 — halloween social (2/2) 👻

apparently the dress code was somewhere between spooky, sexy, and 'i found this in my suitcase five minutes ago.'

and somehow, everyone made it work.

a few more faces, questionable fashion decisions (in the best way), and a whole lot of people having fun on the dance floor.

afrokiz bangkok | day 2 — halloween social (1/2) 🎃

somewhere between the costumes, the music, and a dance floor that never seemed to empty, it was just another perfectly normal night of dancing.

well, as normal as it gets when someone's dancing next to a skeleton and another person has devil horns on.

a little bit of halloween, a lot of dancing, and some lovely people in between.

afrokiz bangkok | day 2, artist demos

one of my favourite things about watching different artists dance is how differently they interpret the same idea.

some make it look ridiculously effortless, some bring all the attitude, and others throw in something that makes the entire room react.

and then there's me, somewhere on the floor, trying to figure out where they're going next so i can actually get the shot.

a few frames from the day 2 demos.

afrokiz bangkok | day 2, before dark

a room full of people trying to get their bodies to cooperate with what they've just been taught.

some getting it immediately, some figuring it out along the way, and plenty of laughing in between.

i quite enjoy photographing workshops for this reason. there's so much happening beyond the actual steps.

and somewhere between all the practice, the conversations, and the dancing, the afternoon just disappears.

the dancing is usually what brings everyone into the room.

but it's never quite the whole story, is it?

it's the people who light up when they spot someone they know. the hugs that last a little longer than expected. the conversations that somehow happen in the middle of a very loud room. and the little expressions people make when they forget there's a camera nearby.

of course, there's a lot of dancing too.

a few faces, a few stories, and a lot of moments in between.

night social at @afrokizbkk 📸 by @bobwiththecamera

somewhere on the chao phraya, things got a little out of hand. in the best possible way.

a boat full of dancers, bangkok lighting up around us, music that wasn't particularly interested in letting anyone sit down, and a whole lot of familiar faces finding each other again.

some people danced. some people caught up. some people apparently decided the dance floor needed a handstand.

and i just kept wandering around with my camera, trying not to miss any of it.

a few moments from the afrokiz bangkok boat party. 🚢

a little less explaining, a little more dancing.

some of my favourite frames from the artist demos at afrokiz bangkok.

different styles, different energies, and a few moments i was very happy to have caught.
