REMINDER: Mangrove clean-up of two illegal dumpsites on Isla Solarte — TOMORROW!

📍Meeting: Bocas Pirates Dive Center at 9 am, Wednesday May 20, 2026. The clean-up should last until around 1 pm.

Unfortunately there are a few known mangrove dumping sites around the archipelago. The community mobilizes to clean them up once or twice a year. Every time people make the same suggestions:

“Install trail cameras to catch someone in the act.”

A lot of talk, though no one has acted on it before. However the organizer of this next clean up, Jana Köbel of @oneearthoneocean, has pledged to buy three cameras and $120 has already been donated to the costs of surveilling dump sites. Nothing has been purchased just yet. If you’d like to suggest specific equipment, have insight on the logistics of this plan or be otherwise want to be involved, contact The Bocas Breeze +507 6537-0405 or Jana +49 176 43303188.

“Go through the trash to find the source.”

It’s been done and evidence has been presented to the authorities. Nothing happened. The volunteers of tomorrow’s clean-up are planning go through the trash for clues. Let’s see what happens this time.

Much respect to Jana of One Earth One Ocean for sparking this initiative and making moves to surveil mangrove dump sites.

This Wednesday, we participated in a cleanup of abandoned waste in the mangroves. 🌱💪 These efforts highlight the amount of illegal dumping present in the archipiélago, which we are still working towards finding who is responsible and having authorities act on it. A huge thanks to everyone who joined the effort with their time, energy, and equipment. You are fantastic!

ATTENTION: Time changed to 9AM!!!!

My team and I found two huge illegal dumping sites, well hidden in the mangroves off the coast of Solarte.
We’re organizing a major cleanup on Wednesday, May 20, and would greatly appreciate any support. We need as many helping hands as possible—as well as boats to access the sites and transport the collected waste.

Mangroves cradle the coast, shelter new life, and turn tides into nurseries. And that’s why it’s alarming they are continually being used as dumpsites in Bocas del Toro. How can we prevent this contamination? 🌱

It’s time for another big mangrove cleanup!

Let's tackle another large illegal dumpsite hidden in the mangroves off Solarte.

📅 Saturday, October 3
⏰ 9:00 AM
📍 Meeting point: Bocas Pirates Dive Center, Ave G Norte

We’d greatly appreciate any kind of support. To make this cleanup a success, we need:

🧤 Helping hands — the more, the better!
🚤 Boats to access the sites and transport the collected waste
💰 Donations of any kind
🗑️ Trash bags

What to bring:

💧 Plenty of water
☀️ Sunscreen or other sun protection
🌧️ A rain jacket — this is Bocas, after all!
🦟 Bug spray
🧤 Boots and gloves, if you have them

During the months of September and October, the sea in Bocas del Toro always goes flat. So when I can’t teach surfing, this is what I do. Boat Captain and Divemaster at @bocas_pirates .
This time we went diving one of the most iconic and heavy XL Big Waves in Bocas…

It’s unbelievable the tranquility of the water at this very breaking point, where the energy of the wave creates a massive and scary barrel. Only the breavest and faint of heart can surf it, but only us in this months can go dive it.
I’m proud and thankful for my friends at Bocas Pirates Dive Center for teaching me all I know in the water. Without you guys I’ve never become the professional that I am today.

Gotta say the waters here in Bocas del Toro on Isla Colón, Panama were murky as hell. Day diving often resembled night dives, but hey —- I’m here so why not?

The Pink Meanies are back 🌸😠🎀

While this individual Drymonema larsoni, also known as the pink meanie, only measured around 10 cm across its bell, these carnivorous jellies can reach up to almost 1 meter across and have tentacles that can stretch up to 24 meters long! A jelly’s bell is the main umbrella shaped dome of their body that houses its internal organs and powers their movement. Their slow, rhythmic contractions allow them to stay buoyant and navigate as they drift through the water, waiting to entrap other jellies such as the moon jellyfish (Aurelia aurita) with their long trailing tentacles!

Well, the waters were murky, but we managed to see an octopus, a mantis shrimp, several toadfish, spotted drums, and eels, and tons of crabs while I was here….

I was in two minds about posting the stuff due to poor viz resulting in “not so happy with it” quality - but then … why not!
