De reden waarom ik deze boeken heb gekozen, is mijn interesse in voeding. Het tv-programma Keuringsdienst van Waarde is de rode draad in deze passie. Al sinds mijn kindertijd wilde ik kok worden. Voeding en cultuur zijn mijn passie, en ik ben bovendien vijf jaar vegetarisch geweest. En ja, ik maak het mezelf niet gemakkelijk. Na het lezen van deze boeken zou ik zo weer vegetarisch kunnen worden.
Maar mijn interesse in eten gaat verder dan dat. Ik wil mezelf vooral openstellen voor alle keukens wereldwijd, en dat betekent dat ik mezelf niet kan beperken tot een veganistisch dieet. Deze boeken zijn dan ook een realitycheck: informeer jezelf, heb respect voor eten, en voed jezelf en de mensen om je heen. by @boektik

Een boek om vaker er bij te pakken. Ik kan het niet beter verwoorden:
“Deze roman gaat niet over Ierland alleen, maar over de hele wereld. Keegan stelt fundamentele vragen over medenplichtigheid, en de hoop op verandering. Elk woord staat op de juiste plek en het effect daarvan is dat haar krachtige zinnen ontroeren en diep raken.” Hilary Mantel by @boektik

Elizabeth Finch. I devoured it in one day, nearly in one sitting.

Elizabeth a mysterious and confident lecturer. She wasn’t old fashioned nor modern. A little out of her time.
Narrator Neil admiring her, almost loving her, unfolding the unreliable portrait of Elizabeth as a heroic figure.
Then comes Julian the Apostate pairing the two together in a long tough essay. When in the third chapter the puzzle pieces begin to come together.
A book filled with philosophical prose and historical references makes it a special read.
My first Julian Barnes, and many more to follow!
4 stars from me, and definitely will come back to it one day. by @boektik

Finito. An anticipated read, that didn’t disappoint. Siblings, maybe one of the most intense relationships we can experience. Coco has successfully captured it in detailed and gorgeous writing. 4 stars ✨ Cleopatra and Frankenstein has been added to my #tbr. Beauty is terror. Whatever we call beautiful, we quiver before it. Donna Tartt - The secret history

I finally read it and the story leaves you in terror.

Dark, pretentious, tedious at times. Very character driven with a shocking plot. A good read with beautiful writing.

I read it in Dutch in my second hand copy!

Puur uit interesse opgepakt in de bibliotheek. Een meeslepend roman over het einde van de L’Algérie Française, verteld uit de perspectief van een oude Godfather een zogenaamde ‘pier-noir’ met een gewelddadige verleden. Zorgvuldig houd hij zijn verleden geheim maar in het zicht van de dood weegt het zwaar. Een historisch roman, maar met een actuele waarde. by @boektik

I am guilty of reading through Autumn in one breath, and not following up with the rest of the quartet.
Simply because I wanted to read them in their resemblant #season. And soon enough by winter my pile of books was overwhelming.

So here we are; one year later.
#Autumn has arrived, hence my second attempt.

I will be #rereading Autumn.
And this time I will #challenge myself to complete the well praised #Quartett by next summer!

Get to know me a little better.

When I started this boutique of books, the idea was to give the beautiful covers, and the great texts the front row.
But the more time I spent on here, the more I realize that it is a personal book portfolio. And that is what makes it unique.

Therefore here a little foto dump…
I am Julia.
I carry a book everywhere I go.
Very cliche but it is a habit.

I have traveled quite a bit and definitely want to travel and learn more about Europe.

Most importantly I have my lovely little family. My two cats and the love of my life are the foundation to everything I do. Definitely a cat momma.

An intimidating, character driven, and powerfully written book.

A little life…

It has been a few months since I finished this book. And I needed the time to think, because I did try to emotionally distance myself from the characters. Especially Jude.
Upon finishing this book I just found the implausibility of all the heavy abuse, depressing events and the successes on the other hand very contradicting. For some reason that kept me from feeling the emotions sincerely.
But the prose and the character driven story made me read it swiftly and fast. Yes, I do agree that there could have been cuts here and there, but Hanya Yanaghara has beautifully completed a heart breaking story.

I definitely need te reread it….
For that I need some time.

Hi there 👋🏻
It has been a long time…

As everyone has experienced and learned the past year… is that everything thing can change drastically. And some how, all that time sitting at home led me to a reading slump.

On the contrary… a lot has changed in my private life. And I think change brought me to a point where my attention was slightly off and away from my wel beloved hobby. Because that change was also very exciting.

Well you might be eager to know what changed… I bought my first home!
A place of my own, and a place to come to rest. Although that rest will have to wait a while. It is an old house that needs renovation.

And that is where my attention has been…

But I am glad to announce… the need to read has come back! And I hope to share my next review in the upcoming week!

Lesson to be learned… embrace the change!
