“I recently came across Trüby Trio’s mix from 2001 (DJ-Kicks), and knew I wanted to start with High Jazz because it’s such a banger; then the mix was kind of negotiating how to exit that clubby vibe and move towards playing funk/disco, which is my true favourite genre to mix. 🗣️ Q&A with DJ TalisMan 🗣️

💡 What sparked your interest in digging/collecting music? Was it a person, experience, or specific moment?

I would say that my dad has always been quietly inspiring me to be a DJ. Him and my uncle started DJing in their youth as the Stewart Brothers; I hear stories of Tenerife, and their jaunt as EFM (the “Elite Funk Masters”). Shortly after I was born, my dad acquired a record distribution company for a quid (the parent company was going bust), so I grew up surrounded by vinyl. For a while, I’d been making a playlist of a “dream DJ set”, and decided to just rip the plaster off. I have a few DJ friends who gave me sage advice and kindly let me use their decks. I played my first house party at the end of 2023. That morning was the first time I’d ever interacted with CDJs. Somehow, it was still one of the best times I’ve mixed (or at least I thought so…)

“I did toy with doing a super sunshiney lovely house mix to beat the looming winter blues, but instead I just tried to lean into the weirdness of the deep dark autumn nights :) Lots of techno, etc. featuring: broken rhythms, spacey trippy atmospheres, sub bass and drum machine workouts. Music that I feel in my whole body, stuff that makes my eyes roll back in my head and puts a grin on my face on the dancefloor. Admittedly probably too heavy for the evening hours of a Thursday night!! but I hope you find some enjoyment in it anyway ❤️” – Eve Lizard

🗣️ Q&A with Eve Lizard 🗣️

💡 What sparked your interest in digging/collecting music? Was it a person, experience, or specific moment?
I got super into dance music as a young adult, all thanks to the wonderful scene in Leeds and the countless amazingly talented DJs here playing great music :) I had a regrettable EDM phase as a kid that I wanna say sparked some sort of electronic music love… but idk. Really it was punk, emo, and indie rock that got me into digging obscure music rabbit holes as a teenager! I started going out to very student-centric parties playing mostly garage, where the crowds were often very hyper-masculine & standoffish. But just hearing that music on soundsystems was enough to give me the bug, and I started seeking out parties with more interesting music and much nicer crowds. The queer party + underground dance scenes in Leeds are fantastic & inspiringly resilient despite a lot of struggle. I would not be DJing at all without all the lovely people I’ve met here!

🎇 FINAL BOING! 🎇

Thurs 18th December

To celebrate the end of this lovely musical boingy journey, I invite two of my favourite selectors and musical mentors, Simon Scott @triberecordsleeds and Mike BC @mike_g_bc , to pilot the controls of the Outlaws spaceship one final time and show us how it’s done. 🚀

There’s not much that Simon hasn’t done in his long career as a DJ and promoter. Every DJ who has passed through Leeds is acquainted with the enigmatic owner of legendary Tribe Records with his encyclopaedic – and frankly unfathomable – knowledge of dance music from the last 50 years. Simon runs more parties than the rest of us put together with SubDub, Club Cosmos, Amado, BEAMS, Dimensions Festival and Outlook under his belt. Phew!

Mike BC is a DJ’s DJ and one of the loveliest people on the scene. Insane breadth in taste and always has the deepest cuts ranging from afro boogie, chuggy downtempo, jackin house, to dub and cold wave.

There’ll be no tinsel at this party! Burn your crackers and bin your baubles as this is Christmas done Outlaws style. 🔥

Expect wicked house selections featuring some choice cuts from Chicago and Las Islas Baleares. 🌴

Come through one final time for a spicy margarita and throw down your worst of shapes. 💃🕺🤩

We’re joined by @the_dangers_of_jazz (Rachel Jazz) of @boing_lds and the co-founder of @the_pleasuredome_must_be_built - for a seriously slick set of Deep House, Dub Techno and Downtempo, recorded live from @outlawsyachtclub, Leeds.

“I think I have a fairly broad taste in music but find myself drawn towards tracks with elements of jazz, funk, or dub. I rarely do an all electronic mix as I flit between disco and jazz adjacent stuff a lot but this time I wanted to embrace the deeper, dubbier, electronic side of my collection. As of late I’ve been really digging Francois K’s Deep Space mix series and I think a lot of that comes through in this mix. I also love a lot of early 90s ambient which I wanted to pay homage to here.” ——

🗣️ Q&A with Rachel Jazz 🗣️

💡 What sparked your interest in digging/collecting music?

I’ve been an electric guitarist since I was 8 and built my own bass guitar at 16. It was figuring out how to work my loop pedal with all the crazy effects which really sparked my interest which was a nice segue into properly discovering electronic music when I was about 19. I used to collect CDs when I was a teenager and still have a decent collection of prog rock and jazz fusion with some hip hop, metal, and funk thrown in.

🎚️ Tell us about any parties, events, collectives or labels that have inspired you.

Where to start! I think everyone that runs parties in Leeds inspires me as the job is so tough right now so everyone who painstakingly puts on nights with love and attention to detail deserves a raise and a big hug.

Hearing 10-minute gospel tracks at @c0smicsl0p or tunes like “Underwater” by Harry Thumann at @lovemuscleleeds gave me the confidence to embrace playing what I wanted to hear, rather than what I think I should play as a DJ (i.e. generic house music). Hearing Andrea Dama at my first @pleasuremax.x.x was my first “what the hell am I dancing to” moment, blew my mind. Had never heard of New Beat or proto-trance, leftfield disco stuff. Still one of my favourite sets to this day. Working at Outlaws Yacht Club also exposed me to a huge variety of music, as did going to @clubcosmosuk, @lickquidgold_, and @bobandweaveleeds taken in Outlaws Yacht Club by @boing_lds

Next Thursday we have the penultimate Boing for a special collaboration with Leeds musical powerhouse and renowned mix series @inthewindow___ ! ❤️

Join us for an odyssey through musical waters with some of Leeds’ finest selectors for a Boing x In The Window collaboration at Outlaws Yacht Club! 🚢

Hoisting the anchor on the first leg of our voyage will be DJ TalisMan @tallulahhowarthcreative who graced us on deck(s) at the very first Boing and will be touring the ship around the coasts of Africa and the Americas for a healthy serving of funky treats, disco heat, and afrobeat. 💫

Up ahead though the skies darken and Eve Lizard @evelizard.dj steers the ship as we navigate stormy waters through choppy breaks, thunderous house, and squelchy techno. 🌊

With our yacht intact, the clouds begin to lift and waters pacify. Resident Rachel Jazz @the_dangers_of_jazz will navigate us through dark and unfamiliar waters with a selection of dub techno and spacey ambience as we hold out for the sunlight to guide us home… 🌛

Back by popular demand, Desi night is springing into Outlaws once again! 🤯

The first Boing was a South-Asian influenced party with Leeds legend PSK @pranavsk at the controls. It was a rousing success and we have been planning the follow-up ever since!

This time PSK returns with two stars of the Leeds underground global music scene, Girl Called Sim @girlcalledsim and Lotus Phaze @lotus_phaze, bringing a fusion of Desi classics, world disco edits, and familiar party tunes with a South-Asian twist. Very excited for them to bring the heat to Outlaws.🌡️

For a long time, I’d been told tales of this elusive turntable magician and her incredible sets, but it wasn’t until earlier this year that I first heard her play at the fantastic party @pulluptothebumper_shipley - wow. I’ve been keen to get her down ever since and the time has finally come…

In a rare musical outing, we are super lucky to have Lucy Locket @discolibrarian grace our decks for a night of joy and dancing!

After a short hiatus (to go on holiday and sort Pride out ❤️), I’m very happy to announce that Boing is back and sproingier than ever!

This week we welcome Alex Howard @alexhowxrd1 who is no stranger to the ethos of Boing, with a penchant for all music weird and wonky. As one half of @bobandweaveleeds, he’s honed his signature style of, well, anything goes! We’ll be packing our bags full of wonky disco-adjacent records, some off-kilter trippy downtempo with some dashes of synth pop and who knows what else…

Bathhouse Boing! 🥵

After soundtracking the debauchery at a sell-out PleasureMaxxx with DJ Subaru just over a week ago, we’re very excited to have Tam Tam @tamtam_pda join us for a saucy Boing before heading back to the steamy cellars of Berlin’s underground club scene. 🛁

As a co-founder of queer party PDA in Berlin, expect a night of dirty, downtempo disco and erotic synth pop and Italo.

This week we welcome sweetheart and Leeds’ best dressed, the ever-regal, Jazyra. ❤️ @jaz.christou

A long-time regular behind the decks at Outlaws, it’s been too long since their last musical excursion and this week we have the unique opportunity to hear what exciting gifts for the ears they have been curating in the meantime.

I’ve been sent a modest list of songs with personal anecdotes attached to each as a flavour of what to expect on the night - and yet I have the suspicion that I will be surprised and thrilled in equal measure when I hear what they have in store for us on Thursday.
