Bokani Dyer Trio – Traditions Tour

The Chairman | 07 November

Raised in the lineage of his father, jazz musician Steve Dyer, Bokani carries the ideals of Ubuntu into his music. On Traditions, he turns inward to the sounds that shaped him — reimagining inherited material through the intimate language of the piano trio. For the first time, most of the repertoire are covers.

“I’m not trying to reinvent the wheel. I’m interested in new, novel ways of approaching the songs, leaning on the established traditions that have come before.”
The focus track, “African Piano: Inxembula,” is a traditional Xhosa folk song famously recorded by uhadi player Nofinishi Dywili and The Ngqoko Women’s Ensemble. Meaning “the ugly one,” it was also repurposed as a struggle song during apartheid. Bokani’s version moves it into a new setting of piano, bass, flute and drums — connecting generations while letting the tradition keep evolving.

Traditions is both a look into the past and a way forward.

Doors open 6:00 PM | Show starts 8:00 PM
Tickets available on Quicket.

The Bokani Dyer Trio combines modern Afro-jazz with swinging post-bop and rhythmic grooves. Pianist and composer Bokani Dyer’s playing is central to the trio’s sound, with close ensemble interplay leaving plenty of room for improvisation in live performance.

A couple of months ago, @lumanyano_mzi , @timothynortonbass and I got together at 360 Sounds Studios to record what would become Bokani Dyer Trio - Traditions.

Now, we’re only a few hours away from the album dropping. Traditions comes out at midnight, so it’s not too late to pre-save via the link in bio.

To celebrate, I’ll be going live on IG at around 12:30 PM CET to talk a little more about the inspiration behind the album. Join me if you can 🎹 by @bokanidyer
