POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
TW (violence) Remembrance as Resistance.

In April, I began writing down the names of people who had died in detention centers and the countries they were from. (This information is available on ICE’s website.) The first person who died in January 2025, was Ethiopian. I wondered who he was, whether his family had been able to mourn him, and whether his body had made it home.

Between January 2025 and April 2026, there were 56 people on my list, from 25 countries.

But these numbers don’t begin to capture the full extent of the harm. They don’t account for children separated from their parents and held in detention centers, or the many others whose lives have been profoundly affected.

To process this grief, I purchased On Loss and Absence: Textiles of Mourning and Survival. I was particularly struck by a section curated by Sharbreon Plummer entitled Remembrance as Resistance. It featured work by American artists and quilters Dorothy Burge and Carolyn Mazloomi, who use their art as a form of activism, evoking our shared humanity.

Inspired by their work, I wanted to create a piece of remembrance to honor those who had passed, who, like me, were immigrants, refugees, and Americans.

I composed the flags of the 25 countries into a series of three wall hangings. Among them are Mexico, where a large portion of those who died were from, Canada, and of course the United States, which is represented in the red and white warp threads from which the flags are suspended.

My longtime partners at Sabahar wove the wall hangings with care. They arrived just a week ago, and I was moved when I first saw them. I asked my friend and textile artist Krystle Collins to embroider the delicate details of the flags. She dropped them off yesterday morning, and once again, I was moved by the care and intricacy of the work.

I think of this piece as an offering of remembrance, and I’m grateful that it will be on view this weekend at Gowanus Open Studios. My friends at Craftspring were kind enough to invite me to participate. Below are the details for anyone who’d like to attend.

Since my last post, we’ve hosted two Natural Dye Workshops at the studio with @nelisenasheida , and they’ve both been AMAZING!

The first was a plant-based workshop where we dyed napkins with plant powders and lots of flower petals. The second was an indigo workshop where we dyed placemats.

This fall, we’re continuing the magic with two more: Pillow Dip Dyeing (!!) in September and a Fall Napkin Natural Dye Workshop in October.

Someone asked me recently, why workshops?

The long story is that this year, I’ve been making more time for inspiration. I try to take one inspiration day a month. As creatives, we need to stay open and curious—otherwise the work stops flowing.

Most of those days end up being museum visits, but earlier this year I did a private natural dye workshop with Nelise that felt restful, grounding and inspiring. It was also so much fun that I wanted to experience it in community. And, after all, I have the perfect space on the lower level of my studio to host them.

I left each workshop buzzing.

If you’re in NYC and have been following us for a bit, come hang out. It’s a great time. by @boleroadtextiles

Last week, on my ‘Inspiration Day’, @nelisenasheida stopped by the studio to give me a lesson on natural dyeing. She brought a delightful mix of plant based powders, dried flowers (and a few insects!)

She helped me hand dye two napkins, steam them... and the result left me speechless as you can see in the video, lol.

I had so much fun and that we’re planning a follow up lesson! Who wants to join?

UPDATE! Natural Dye Workshop set! Saturday 6/13 2-5! Link in bio to sign up! by @boleroadtextiles

POV: you only need one pillow.

but make sure it’s designed by an ivy league-educated, award-winning interior designer who’s also an asylum-granted ethiopian immigrant, using textiles as a medium to tell stories of culture, heritage, and the provenance of indigenous craft as the foundation of modern design.

oh—and one of ~20 black-owned textile brands in the U.S., and one of the few founders sourcing from her country of origin.

The Curator’s Table was an evening of connection, a chance to gather around a shared appreciation for art, design, and the forms that have shaped and continue to shape our lives and work. We brought together a group of collectors, designers, artists, architects, and friends to reflect on the creative forces that guide us.

Traditional African artworks and artifacts have long influenced how we perceive the world, whether we realize it or not. For many, these works may not be front and center, but they carry a quiet energy that continues to inform how we create, express, and build, especially for people of the diaspora. This dinner was held in honor of that influence and served as a space to be in community with others who are shaped by similar inspirations.

Thank you to @boleroadtextiles for so generously opening your space to us. Your work is a true reflection of how traditional design continues to inspire!

And a huge thank you to @homecoming_experiences for curating such a thoughtful experience, from the cuisine to the table setting. Grateful for your support in bringing this vision to life!
