In the early morning hours, a collective of artists and rock climbers, hung a Palestinian flag measuring 6×10 meters on the Branické skály (Braník rocks). The action is a symbol of solidarity with the Palestinian people, who have been facing a devastating Israeli offensive, loss of homes and lives for almost two years.

“We want to draw attention to the fact that the Czech Republic continues to actively support the Israeli regime, which systematically commits war crimes including ethnic cleansing of the civilian population. Our political representatives at best do not respond to appeals from individuals and civic movements to reconsider their support, at worst they silence critical voices and prevent even simple discussion on this topic. Therefore, we decided to draw attention to it differently – by disrupting the course of an ordinary day,” stated the artistic-activist groups in their declaration.

“We decided to follow the actions of climbing groups that enrich their climbing expression around the world’s crags with statements about the unbearable situation in Gaza. Both climbing and art share the ability to go beyond boundaries. Those geographical ones are firmly closed for the inhabitants of Palestine, so by hanging the flag on Braník, we wanted to momentarily overcome the boundaries of sport and thus ask the Prague population for much-needed solidarity in a symbolically hard-to-reach place,” add the authors of the action.

The action joins a wave of similar interventions around the world. In the Alps, climbers as part of the “100 summits for Gaza” initiative hung Palestinian flags on mountain peaks, in the French Alps on Aiguille du Dru, in the USA the collective “Climbers With Palestine” unfurled a giant banner with the words “Stop the Genocide” on the El Capitan wall. Murals (Belfast) or public space installations (Paris, Barcelona) are also appearing in European cities. These images of solidarity have become a visible symbol of resistance against genocide and remind us that remaining silent is no longer bearable and is immoral.

[For EN scroll down] 13. květen, Praha - Dnes jsme zbarvili řeku Vltavu do ruda. Tento symbol připomíná krev 186 000 obětí izraelské ofenzivy v Gaze. Nejsou to jen oběti bombardování, ale také hladomoru, dehydratace a zničeného zdravotnického systému. Izrael blokuje hranice Pásma Gazy a už více než 10 týdnů do něj nevpustil žádnou humanitární pomoc. Mezinárodní soudy vyšetřují Izrael za genocidu a vydaly zatykač na jeho představitele. Ti zároveň oficiálně vyhlašují svůj záměr Gazu zcela zničit a vyhladit více než 2 miliony obyvatel. Česká vláda izraelský režim dál bezvýhradně podporuje. Vyzýváme ji k tomu, aby začala jednat. Ukončete spolupráci s izraelským zbrojním průmyslem, podpořte trvalé příměří a vyšetřování válečných zločinů. Česká republika nesmí být spoluviníkem genocidy. Nikdy více, je teď.

May 13, 2025, Prague - Today, we turned the Vltava River red. The red dye represents the blood of 186,000 victims of Israeli offensive in Gaza. These are victims of bombing, famine, dehydration, and the destruction of healthcare infrastructure. Israel continues its blockade of the Gaza Strip border and has not allowed entry of any humanitarian aid for over 10 weeks. International courts are investigating Israel for genocide and have issued arrest warrants for its officials. Meanwhile, the Israeli government openly declares its intention to wipe out Gaza and exterminate more than 2 million of its inhabitants. The Czech government is relentless in its unconditional support for the Israeli regime. We demand that our representatives take immediate action. End cooperation with the Israeli arms industry, support a permanent ceasefire and war crimes investigation. The Czech Republic must not be complicit in genocide. Snažíte se zbourat budovu, která má obrovskou architektonickou hodnotu a jejíž unikátní technologické řešení nemá u nás obdoby. Brutalistní budovu, která je pro mnohé inspirací.
Místo ní chcete další skleněnou fasádu kterých je ve městě přespříliš. Město nepotřebuje další unifikované kanceláře, z kterých bohatnou developeři. Město potřebuje zachovávat historickou hodnotu a myslet na to, co odkáže budoucím generacím. Važme si unikátů ve městě a chraňme je.
