Photographs by John Tyman, Samburu, Kenya, 1982.

Made during Tyman’s time in northern Kenya, these photographs document aspects of Samburu dress and adornment, with particular attention to the arrangement of beadwork across the body.

Portraits are presented alongside close studies of necklaces, head ornaments and other details, recording the colour, pattern, materials and construction of individual forms of adornment.

Together, the photographs form part of a wider body of work by Tyman documenting communities and everyday life in Kenya during the early 1980s, now held within the Bomet Archive.
