1991 Mc Escher Sample AOPs

The Mc Escher AOP is a staple in the vintage scene. I own multiple myself. But I never thought I would own a sample let alone two.

I’ve personally never even seen a sample of an Escher shirt. So I’m beyond excited to get these 2 for the collection.

1996 Keith Haring Playboy Shirt

In 1986 Keith Haring made 8 covers for playboy, all being untitled. Though “Bunny on the Run” (or “Bunny on the Move”) was commonly used for this piece by galleries.

1990s CG Designs (Robert Mapplethorpe) “Free Art. Stop Art Censorship Now” Shirt

This specific anti-censorship tee was created in response to the intense controversy surrounding Robert Mapplethorpe’s photography exhibitions in the late 1980s and early 1990s, especially his traveling exhibition The Perfect Moment. The shirt is a really interesting piece of history from the culture wars of that era, representing the fight for artistic freedom and against institutional censorship.

They were controversial mainly because Mapplethorpe’s work included extremely explicit sexual imagery, at a time when the U.S. was already in a major debate over public funding, obscenity, homosexuality, and what could be shown in publicly supported museums.

1990s Richard Avedon “Ronald Fischer, Beekeeper, Davis, California, May 9, 19810” Shirt

Richard Avedon first got the idea for the photo in a dream, sketching the image in a notepad when he woke up. He later placed advertisements in beekeeping journals looking for someone willing to be photographed shirtless and covered in hundreds of live bees. To create the portrait, queen bee pheromone was applied to Ronald Fischer, attracting the swarm that covered his body.

The other people on the shirt are unknown. The band is pretty random. They’re an older group that mostly plays local events.

1980s Keith Haring “Snakes” Long Sleeve

Originally sold through Keith Haring’s NYC Pop Shop in the 1980s.

The all-over vertical snake print was unlike anything else produced by the Pop Shop. Whether it was a design that didn’t resonate with buyers at the time or simply a challenging print to manufacture, this has become one of the more elusive Keith Haring pieces out there.

1990 Keith Haring “Stop Aids” Shirt

Keith Haring’s “Stop AIDS” art was created in 1989, after finding out about his aids diagnosis. In 1990 the estate teamed up with the Red Hot Organization for the Red Hot + Blue project. To create this shirt.

Happy to finally own this graphic, let alone have the “Art Is U” tag that I’ve only personally seen on a single Barbara Kruger shirt before.

Vintage Mc Escher “Mummified Priests in Gangi, Sicily” (1932)

While traveling in 1932 with his friend Giuseppe Haas-Triverio, Escher was invited by local youths to see the mummies.

The mummies are located in the A Fossa di Parrini (Crypt of the Priests) in the basement of the San Nicolò church. It consist of around 100 mummified priests from 1728–1872, displayed in niches.
