Faces of Salt - Hannah Saunders

I genuinely think I was born a Labrador because, quite frankly, you'll almost always find me in the water.

From a very young age, I was a confident swimmer, maybe a little too confident at times (that’s a story for another time). Whether it was swimming lessons after school, training and competing, or spending every family holiday in the sea, I was happiest when I was splashing about.

Originally from the UK, there wasn’t always a lot of opportunity to swim, but I was lucky enough to grow up around boats and watersports, which only fuelled my love for being outdoors. Even to this day, I'm always the first one in the water on holiday, whatever the conditions. That’s a true Brit for you

When I moved to Australia four years ago, I completely fell in love with the ocean pools that we're lucky enough to have, and with water temperatures far kinder than the UK, an after-work dip soon became part of my daily routine.

Then, in 2022, a friend invited me to join her Friday swim crew at Bondi. I'll admit, I was a little apprehensive. The only things I really knew about Bondi were dangerous waves and the lifeguards from Bondi Rescue... so I figured it was probably worth the risk! My first real ocean swim was the bay swim with Salties. I'd never experienced a post-workout feeling quite like it. The morning sunshine and the buzz of making it for that famous picture, followed by that all-important Bondi coffee... I was completely hooked.

Not long after, I became a Bondi Penguin and rarely missed a Wednesday morning swim. Since then, I've completed several races that I never imagined I'd be capable of. But more importantly, it is the sense of community that I now feel. The ocean has introduced me to some of the kindest, most inspiring people I've met since moving to Australia. Every week I'm greeted by familiar faces and new ones, sharing coffees, swapping stories and creating friendships that started with simply saying yes to a swim or even buying a matching swimsuit.

For me, ocean swimming has become so much more than exercise. It's my reset, my social life, my therapy and my happy place.

Faces of Salt - Zoë Snowden

2020 - my ocean swimming journey started. With feeling unfulfilled and isolated, I decided I wanted to challenge myself to swim the Bondi Bay even though I was somewhat petrified. Classic Brit! Years before, I said “I wouldn’t swim in the ocean- what about sharks?” but I eventually realised: why am I living in Australia if I’m not going to immerse myself in the Australian lifestyle?

I managed to rope in some friends one Saturday in summer on a crystal clear day to do the bay with me because, safety in numbers!

Wow, the thrill I felt, the absolute natural high after- I knew then this has to be part of my Australian life! Then I moved to the GC soon after and, having no friends there, the ocean was the only place I felt at peace and got some joy! I joined a weekly ocean swim group which gave me the confidence I needed to take on my first swim race. Moving back to Sydney in October 2023, I made Salties part of my weekly routine. Swimming with Salties was something that kept me feeling alive when the world around me felt hard.

Even though getting up at 5:45 a.m. is always hard, the moment I start swimming with the group, all my worries disappear, and I feel truly present. That’s what makes it so special to me. To be part of something like Salties is great. Ocean swimming brings me sooo much joy. In December 2022, I did my first ocean race with a friend, Bondi to Bronte, which I trained for, and it gave me a great sense of pride in myself. The sea/ the ocean is magic to me. I’m known for never wearing a wetsuit, even through winter, which people think I’m crazy for, but are you really an ocean swimmer if you don’t swim through winter?! The ocean swim community in Sydney has brought me some truly euphoric experiences! Thank you, Salties you’ve been a big part of that! I love ocean swimming with my favourite people, it’s one of my favourite experiences in life. - Pure Joy, and to me that’s living. ✨ by @bondi_salties

Faces of Salt - Alexia Derbyshire

Growing up a competitive pool swimmer from London, the pool was my second home, 5am swims were the norm, chlorine was my perfume, and our family bathroom resembled a kit room. But as life pressures increased, swimming started to take a back seat… until I moved to Sydney. With my Kiwi background calling, I decided to see what all the fuss was about. Whilst I didn’t quite make it as far as New Zealand, a crash landing saw me settling in Sydney looking to put down some roots.

Whilst sat at Icebergs one day, I watched countless people go down the steps, cross the bay and return with huge smiles across their faces. Thinking how iconic that swim was, I started chatting to one of those strangers who pointed me in Salties direction.

Living in Chatswood and my new job starting soon, I had limited mornings to try Salties, so a rainy Bondi saw me cross the bridge full of nerves. But that’s where the nerves end. I was welcomed by a group of smiley, friendly faces who encouraged and supported me across the bay, never letting me feel alone or left behind! The post swim coffee that morning felt full of connection, the start of something special and had me coming back the next week.

A moment of courage saw me attending the Salties Christmas party alone, not knowing anyone. That moment of courage led me to meet my close friend and now housemate Lucy and countless other friends. Obsessed with Salties I changed my hours at work and moved to Bondi, all to allow me to be part of this incredible group. I have fallen so deeply back in love with swimming, even completing B2B after just my 3rd bay swim, Cole Classic & Coogee Island Challenge.

Salties has given me more than a place to swim, it’s given me friendship, identity, community, stability, roots and a place to call home. It’s smiley warm faces at 6am, it’s support that extends beyond the swell and rips, it’s a community that lasts throughout the week, not just Fridays and it’s been a lifeline to me. If you can find a group of 350+ swimmers sharing their mutual love, smiles and support without one unfriendly face in sight like Salties then hold on tight, dive right in and never let that go! by @bondi_salties
