🍂 Extended Season Facility Update 🍂 As Bon Echo settles into our extended camping season, there have been a few changes to facility availability throughout the park. Due to freezing temperatures, the water system in the Mazinaw Lake campground area has been winterized. This includes the closure of the trailer fill station, flush toilets, comfort stations, and all water taps in the Mazinaw campgrounds. 🚻 Vault Toilets All vault toilets in Fairway Campground, the Camp Cabin area, and at Main Beach will remain open until December 13. 🚿 Comfort Station The Camp Cabin Comfort Station at Bon Echo Lake is the only comfort station that will remain open until December 13. This heated facility includes: • Flush toilets • Showers • Potable water filling station • Dishwashing station All other comfort stations and flush toilet facilities in the Mazinaw Lake campground area are now closed for the season. 💧 Potable Water Potable water can be accessed at the dishwashing station inside the Camp Cabin Comfort Station. Please note that all exterior water taps in the Mazinaw campground area have been turned off for the season. 🍁 Why do we winterize the water system? As temperatures begin to drop below freezing, water left in pipes, taps, and facility infrastructure can freeze and expand, causing costly damage to the park's water system. Winterizing helps protect these facilities throughout the colder months so they can be safely reopened and enjoyed by visitors next season. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation as we transition into late-season camping at Bon Echo! by @bonechopp
Normally, we'd be preparing to close our park gates for the season this weekend. Traditionally, the third Sunday in October marked the end of camping at Bon Echo, but not this year! We're excited that Bon Echo Provincial Park remains open for camping and day-use until December 13, giving you even more opportunities to enjoy the beauty and solitude of late fall in the park. If you're planning a late-season visit, things will look a little different after October 18. Here's what you need to know before you arrive: Q: Will the Main Gate be open, and do I need to stop to check in? A: Bon Echo's Main Gate will be closed for the season after October 18. For day-use permits, questions, reservation updates, firewood, ice, and Ontario Parks merchandise, please visit the Park Administration Office. Q: Do I still need a day-use permit after October 18? A: Yes. All day visitors must obtain a daily vehicle permit either online in advance or at the Park Administration Office. Visit: https://reservations.ontarioparks.ca/ Q: Will the Comfort Stations be open? A: Only the Comfort Station located at the Camp Cabins will remain open until December 13. This facility includes flush toilets, showers, a potable water filling station, and a dishwashing station. All other Comfort Stations and flush toilets in the Mazinaw Lake Campground area will be closed after October 18 due to freezing temperatures. Q: Will the trailer filling and dumping station be open? A: No. Due to freezing temperatures, the water system in the Mazinaw Lake Campground, including the trailer fill and sanitation station, will be closed after October 18. One trailer dumping lane may remain open until freezing temperatures persist. As autumn's brightest colours settle onto the forest floor, it can be easy to assume nature's annual show has come to an end. But a closer look reveals there's still plenty to discover. A surprising number of young trees are still holding onto their leaves. One species in particular, the American beech, may retain some of its foliage all winter long. This adaptation, known as marcescence, may benefit young trees by discouraging browsing from large herbivores such as deer and moose. You won't have any trouble spotting an American beech on your next walk through the park. Their smooth grey bark and rich ochre-orange leaves stand out at a time when most other deciduous trees have already shed their foliage. Nature's show isn't over just because October has passed. Sometimes, November's beauty is a little more subtle. . . . [Video: A series of videos showcasing the American beech tree in November. How do we know the colder months are soon on their way? Along Bon Echo Creek, our resident beavers have been busy building a well-stocked feed bed near their lodge. These underwater caches of branches and twigs will help sustain them throughout the winter, when ice and snow make foraging more difficult. We love watching these industrious animals swim, feed, and quietly communicate with one another as they prepare for the colder months ahead. Their hard work is one of the surest signs that the seasons are changing. November is a wonderful time for wildlife viewing at Bon Echo. As the crowds begin to thin and the forest grows quieter, many animals become easier to spot as they go about their daily routines. Have you spotted Bon Echo's resident beavers this year? . . . . . Planning to paddle at Bon Echo this fall? Make sure you come prepared and understand the risks. While the autumn days may still feel warm, water temperatures tell a different story. If you end up in the water during a fall storm or capsizing incident, the cold can quickly turn a pleasant outing into an emergency. Before heading out, take some time to familiarize yourself with fall paddling safety and how to prepare for the season's changing conditions. For a great introduction, check out this blog: 🔗 https://blog.ontarioparks.ca/fall-paddling-safety/ Some key reminders: • Always wear a properly fitted PFD. • Check the weather forecast before launching. • Paddle with a partner whenever possible and let someone know your plans. • Know your skill level and don't be embarrassed to go home. Please note that Bon Echo's canoe rentals closed for the season on October 12. Visitors wishing to paddle must bring their own canoe, kayak, or other vessel. A little preparation goes a long way toward ensuring a safe and enjoyable fall paddling experience. Stay safe and enjoy the beauty of autumn on the water! by @bonechopp
🍂 The oak trees may be a little late to the party, but we're sure happy they're here! In autumn, red oaks like the ones growing throughout Bon Echo tend to change colour later than many other trees, including maples. Their rich reds, oranges, and rusty browns provide one last burst of fall colour before winter arrives. These resilient trees can even be found growing atop Mazinaw Rock. Red oaks are well adapted to harsh conditions, using their strong root systems to anchor themselves in tiny cracks and crevices while tolerating the dry, rocky environment. Keep an eye out for these autumn holdouts during your next visit to the park! by @bonechopp
