This image was captured one morning while I was out on the beach shooting the sunrise when much to my surprise this Loggerhead Sea Turtle (Caretta caretta) crawled out of the surf about 50 yards north of where I was standing. She proceeded to do what the experts call a “false crawl” — she did not dig a nest nor deposit any eggs; she just scoped out the beach, firmly decided the vibes were off, and crawled back into the ocean. This particular image captures the moment she paused in the Atlantic surf before setting sail on her journey out to the open ocean. 🌊

Friendly reminder that it is nesting season and these turtles have been/will be making their annual journey ashore to dig nests and lay eggs. Sea turtles are federally protected wildlife and should be observed from a distance (binoculars and/or a zoom lens can help you to observe without disturbing the turtles). Protecting these creatures is a shared responsibility. A few ways humans can help are properly disposing of garbage, filling in any holes you dig on the beach, and reducing coastal light pollution. Small acts can make a big difference. 🩵

The Full Blood Worm Moon Total Lunar Eclipse, as seen from Southeast Florida at 3:00 am, March 2025. 🪱🌕

While it sure didn’t seem like it at the moment, the 2:30am alarm turned out to be worth it. I lugged my camera & tripod out to the driveway to be able to get a clear view of this colorful celestial show. I struggled with some camera shake and blurred images at first, and towards the end of totality, the humidity spiked to 91% which resulted in my lens fogging up so I couldn’t shoot anymore after that. But seeing the total eclipse with my eyes was the most rewarding part. And as a bonus, I did end up with a couple of good shots like this one. I hope you were able to catch a glimpse last night — if not, enjoy this image! 😊

This image was captured a few years back during a long weekend adventure on the Central California coast, a first for me. Having grown up back east, where the coastline is an endless chain of sandy barrier islands, I had no concept of mountains meeting the sea. Until this trip. The rocky coastline and towering cliffside vistas of the west coast are a stark contrast from its eastern counterpart. After a day of driving up and down the Pacific Coast Highway, stopping off at a few small coastal towns, hiking some trails up on the rocky bluffs, and observing various types of west coast wildlife, we found ourselves on a trail with views of the Piedras Blancas Light Station as the sun was setting. It was a mostly overcast sky, but a soft golden orange light painted the clouds and the water’s surface, silhouetting the lighthouse. We shared the view with a flight of Cormorants as they preened and gazed over the glowing, rugged Cali coastline. At this point, we had to turn around and hike back out before it got too dark. The trek back to the car was accompanied by this soft golden light, which seemed to sprinkle a little magic on everything. A nice way to close out the trip. The Golden State, indeed. ✨

I recently upgraded to a 500mm lens and took her for a whirl down at the Jupiter Inlet. Here’s a sampling of the bird buddy images I captured while out there…

Snowy Egret, juvenile Gull (unsure of species), adult Ring-billed Gull, Ruddy Turnstone, and Sanderling.

I feel so excited to have made this long-overdue, big-girl addition to my photography toolbox! Can’t wait to capture more with her! 🤓📷

Some mid-morning dolphin action in the St. Lucie inlet. These playful creatures captured the attention of so many people, both in boats and on the docks. I snapped a lot of photos, most of which were misses, as the dolphins were moving around the inlet rather quickly, and trying to time them surfacing was a challenge. These are some of my shots that turned out well. Always a delight to see these animals out there doing their thing! 🐬🌊

I captured this image shortly after sunrise on a mostly cloudy morning. I found this scene along an ancient limestone outcropping here on Florida’s east coast, and I wanted to shoot it at sunrise as I suspected it would line up very nicely. The weather had been in a rut for weeks, and I had given it multiple attempts of waking up at 5am and hauling my gear out to this location, all to be skunked by fully clouded skies again and again. Some mornings the tide was so high the rocks were barely visible. Other mornings the wind was blowing so hard the ocean was a choppy mess. I was struggling to sync up with all the right conditions. On this particular morning, there was at least some interesting texture in the clouds and a few thin patches where sunlight was peeking through, and the rocks were exposed as the tide was still coming in, so I gave it another go. With a neutral density filter on my lens and my tripod steadied in the sand, I played with the movement of the waves, attempting to time my shutter click just right to get the soft blurred water effect around the rocks. All things considered, I ended up relatively pleased with this image. And while there were moments of letdown and frustration leading up to getting this shot, as in most things in life, the bitterness made it all the sweeter in the end. 😏

I hope February brings you some second, third, and fifteenth chances. And I hope you’re brave enough to try and try again. Nothing worth having or doing comes easy. 🫶

I am super delighted and proud to announce that my Gulf Fritillary image won FIRST PLACE in the North American Butterfly Association’s 2024 photography contest! 🏆🥳👏 This image is currently printed on a full page of the Winter 2024 edition of the American Butterflies magazine! Ahh! This feels like a “pinch me” moment! 😅🦋 @nababutterfly

It’s no secret that butterflies & pollinators have had my interest for quite a few years now, and I’ve learned a lot on my journey as a pollinator advocate (though I still have plenty more to learn!) I wouldn’t have been able to learn as much as I have about butterflies if it weren’t for NABA’s educational resources. From species identification to supportive native habitats, butterfly counting programs, and garden certifications, the work and impact of this organization is far and wide. So to have one of my butterfly images deemed a winner and published by NABA, I can’t help but feel overjoyed and thankful. 😌🙏

One of my biggest goals is to work with nature to bring joy, curiosity, and wonder to other humans, in hopes that in cultivating an awareness of & connection to the natural world people will have more of an interest in taking care of and protecting it. And now more than ever nature and her critters need us to pay attention, speak up, and take action.

As pollinators, butterflies & moths are critical to our shared environment. They are indicator species that give us early warning of environmental peril, as well as serving as a key link in the food chain. NABA is dedicated to the conservation of butterflies and their habitats. This organization envisions a future where wild butterflies thrive in healthy habitats, none are threatened or endangered, and all people can enjoy observing them in nature.

Recently crossed paths with a cute (albeit grumpy-looking) juvenile Gopher Tortoise at a local park. He/she was busy munching away on greenery and was relatively unphased by my presence, pausing only for a second as I knelt on the ground with my camera. I snapped a handful of photos and quietly observed from a distance. And before I moved on, I made sure to tell him/her how cute they were. 😍

The Gopher Tortoise (Gopherus polyphemus) is a native species to Florida and is protected by law. Although it doesn’t happen often because human development encroaches on their habitat, it’s always a delight to see these creatures in the wild. 🐢
