...more pics from the archives...Thankful to my grandparents & great grandparents for raising a boy who at a young age understood the concepts of sharing, selflessness and discipline. In his teens/20s he was a forward thinker, had high self awareness and a passion for life in the big city of Mumbai. His determination in the 60s to get a University degree, a job, be self reliant & explore the world made him into a gutsy young man. He was a rare breed in his family by taking this path at that time. Very thankful that young guy turned out to be my dad; his unique approach to building a life brought us here to Canada. Words such as generous, compassionate, spiritual, truthful, funny, and knowledgeable are associated with dad. His love for playing tabla (similar to what you hear in this mix) dholak and creative arts added vibrancy and colour to our lives.
Always wanting the best for the next generations; setting us all up for a good future and embodying the qualities of a good human for us to emulate. So grateful 💜🌻

...been digging into the archives lately; Mum's journey with her her 5 sisters (we call them masi). They were all married very young, unable to complete higher education then moved from India to Uganda to England. Dealing with food rations, looting, shootings & vandalism in the shops they ran. As well as racism, Polio, in laws, and loss of their father at a young age. Not to mention being 'kicked' out of Uganda in early 70s due to...well, Google that history if you aren't familiar with what happened.
They are/were strong, brave and resilient.
As this fam grows and the seniors age or pass, what happens to their stories of struggle, strength and adaptability? Lots to learn from the past; much to keep in perspective these days.
I'm grateful and been fortunate to have all my masi's and grandmother be a part of my life in some way. Fed, scolded, & looked after me + so many kids in our fam.
From a small village in India to the jungles of Uganda to the High Streets in England to skydiving in Canada at age 73...well deserved round of applause for mum. 👏🏾💜🥻

The year...chaos, losses, people's true colours and egos. Endless SMH, OMG and WTF moments applicable to so many people & situations.
On the flipside, that jar of small wins was a silver lining. Writing down even the tiniest bits of progress made throughout this weirdo year makes for positive year end reading material! Especially when you're redesigning your life.
Thank goodness for music, dance fitness, emojis/emotes, supportive friends old n' new, sarcasm and humour.
I hope you were able to find some moments of joy or a silver lining this year.
As we fiercely turn the page and countdown, I wish for your 2021 to be filled with supportive friends + good health + music + movement + love + laughter. 🥳💜🍷

The first half of 2020 has been a bit of a gong show! Papa Patel has been through a lot, which means continously innovating and thinking outside the box. Throw in many sleepless nights, working through the senior care system, and constantly changing solutions.
Dad... your happy go lucky attitude, ear to ear smile and warm hugs are energy rushes for me, for all of us. I'm very thankful for the little things, which are the most meaningful. I am a lucky daughter, I get to have YOU as my dad.
Sending positive vibes out to the universe for an amazing second half of 2020!!!

No early morning drive to Brock this year to bring back my graduating younger nephew.

10 years ago today I signed on the dotted line for my place. However, prior to that pen to paper moment were years of setbacks, obstacles, responsibilities and challengers. Which resulted in breaking a few 'rules' and trusting your gut to take a different route.
Sometimes you actually have to not listen to certain people. Your intuition will tell you who and why.
Looking back, I'm so glad I made the choices that I did. *************************************************

Lazy Sundays filled with tunes was how dad educated me on Hindi music (aka Bollywood); the orchestra, lyricists, singers etc. While he told stories of growing up in Mumbai of course!
This case was his hand luggage enroute to Canada; he personally ensured nothing happened to his vinyl collection...and his cassettes were part of the big overseas shipment!
The love of music is rooted firmly within us, and I'm so thankful that when the beat drops dad still lights up and is ready to dance! 🎵🎶 *************************************************
