POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
This week, I’d like to share some of my favorite South African records that I often play. They feature different styles, but all lean towards disco and boogie influences. What draws me to these records is often the combination of drum programming and synthesizer lines—super catchy and easy to listen to. On top of that, the lyrics are often about love, sometimes featuring vocals that are a little off-key, which gives these parts a lot of character. You’ll either hate it or love it.

I’m not going into the depths of the history of this music, its origins, or the era these songs came to life. Others have written extensively about it and are far better at creating context around this music than I am. If you are curious, I would point you in the direction of @afrosynth’s blog and getting into the liner notes of the various compilations out there.

To me, these tracks are amazing discoveries and over the years searching for these records it has brought me many great connections and converations (you know who you are!), including the start of my friendship with @enlacasatropical, who has showed me a lot of these unknown records over the years. Thanks for that Dene 🫶

Next week, I’ll give you a peek into some Kwaito records from my collection. 🥳 by @bonnefooi_

Today, I’d like to share a few favorite tunes by artists from Angola. The selection features different styles ranging from early 70s to early 90s compositions, the era and location of recording obviously influenced the instruments used and resulted in a highly diverse musical landscape. While the tracks are very different in sound, they all share the same groovy catchiness, whether they are 90 BPM, 140 BPM, or anything in between.

Once again, I hope you’ll discover something new. If these sounds attract you the way they attract me, I encourage you to look up the albums, listen to the full tracks, and dive into the complete records a discography by the artist involved. Most of the records shown have more interesting tunes and are a pleasure to listen to from start to finish.

Now, where to go next…?

Today I received a care package with some records from Cabo Verde I was after for a while. As always, I clean and resleeve the records while packing for the DJ gigs in the weekend and, of course, listen to the new ins. While doing that, I realized again how interesting and timeless this music is to my ear.

Every DJ gig that I play, I bring some records from Cabo Verde ranging from lovely Mornas to groovy Coladeiras and banging Funana for the dancefloors. This music is just special. The arrangements, the timing of the instruments, and the way the synthesizers weave into the music while the timbre of the vocals touches your soul - even though I do not understand the lyrics, the songs still touch me and evoke emotion.

I’d like to share some of my favorite tunes that I often play (hard to choose because there are so many good ones...). Enjoy, and I hope there will be some new discoveries for you too!

I’ll try to do this more often as there is still much to share.

Conjunto Contratempo - Amigo Bedjo

Abel Lima E Les Sofas - Unidade Povo (Liberdade)

JUICY weekend coming up with another “Grisha invites” for Saturday, daytime session on Sunday with one of Brasil’s finest selectors and djs Giu Nunez (!) and a taco food pop-up by chef Jake Goosen 🌶️🌮

Originally from Cornwall, Jake (@jeakgseoon) runs one of Lisbon’s favourite toast spots @tosta.sandwich.kitchen. After taking over kitchens across the city like @cometotrickys and @tasca.pete , we’re super excited to welcome him to us for a special pop-up weekend. On Saturday and Sunday Jake will be serving a taco menu created exclusively for the occasion from 18:00-22.00. Come hungry!!

SATURDAY
“Grisha (@grishagreg) invites” Norm and Bonnefooi.

Norm (@normgrv__ ), a Brussels based dj and record selector whose sets move through cold European electronics, Balearic influences and dance floor oddities. Drawing from 80s and 90s wave, synth and left field club music, his sets are rooted in unexpected connections, with records that slip between genres.

Co-founder of the Bayetë collective (@bayete_fr) and the Pocket of Light reissue label (@pocket.of.light), and performed across world sharing lineups with Palms Trax, Habibi Funk, Kamma & Masalo, Mendel, Barbara Boeing and many others.

Bonnefooi (@bonnefooi_), a Dutch passionate record digger with a unique taste for African, Brazilian and Caribbean music which he blends with disco and house music to create an unforgettable listening experience. His sets are always a journey through different sounds and styles where his passion for sharing music will be evident.

SUNDAY - DAYTIME SESSION! 🔆🔆

We welcome back one of our favourite djs and selectors Giu Nunez (@giununez) who did our first Sunday session here 2 years ago which turned into something very beautiful. From São Paulo, being a dj for the last 16 years and part of the Domply collective, Giu is a common name in the lineup of festivals and parties like Gop Tun Festival, Coala Festial, DGTL São Paulo and ADE.

From 17:00 into sunset Giu will be playing out to the terrace, food will be served and glasses will be poured for a pretty preeetty amazing kick-off to the summer!! by @bonnefooi_

Just came back from two days of digging and DJing in Paris. La Ville de l’Amour always delivers when it comes to finding records. Almost every store or market has gems waiting there. All you have to do is dig through them and listen for yourself to see which records speak to you most.

Sometimes it helps a lot if fellow diggers put you on the right track by pointing out a record that is easy to overlook—for example, because the cover doesn’t grab you at first sight. Also, listen to the whole record; you might find that one crazy cut on the B4 track! ;)

Two days of going through countless records again, traveling around, walking, and taking the metro heavily packed with a record bag and backpack takes up a lot of headspace and energy. So, be prepared when going that route and rest well before heading out! I took Sunday to relax and go through the records I found. Cleaning and re-sleeving them is a soothing and very important process to conserve the artifacts and make sure the records sound their best when played.

Anyway, here are some slides with a few highlights. Enjoy listening and I hope you’ll find some new discoveries. by @bonnefooi_

Following up from my previous post, I wanted to share some thoughts :)

People sometimes ask me how I find records that I want to play. It’s an interesting question that sheds light on a side that exists alongside DJing. It takes a lot of time to develop your taste and train your ear to recognize the music you like and place it in a certain setting you would like to play it in. Everyone’s process is different and it also changes slightly over the years, I would say.

The past three days, I’ve scanned through an immense amount of records in search of special stuff that ends up in my collection, trading, selling, and upgrading. It’s a never-ending process and I’m very much enjoying everything about it. The people I meet during this process are often very interesting; the stories, the characters, the jokes, and the weirdness which all tell a little story. Meeting like-minded spirits brings much joy to my life.

But when is a record special enough? How do you select? Is the price right? How far are you willing to go to pay the price for a rare record? Is the condition good enough? How does the record fit in my DJ sets and do I buy it for the one amazing track or do I listen to the whole thing at home on a Sunday morning?

Much trial and error comes with digging for records, purchasing a record that afterwards feels like a mistake teaches you. It all comes down to listening and develop your ear: which record speaks to you, puts a spell on you, and draws you in? What connection do you have to it? Is it a tune you heard a different DJ play and it reminds you of that moment on the dance floor, or just a straight banger you never heard before and you just GOT to have it? Good music is good music. Putting in the time and effort combined with patience is what I’ve learned, and the records will find you. In my experience, being open makes the going smooth and good.

To give you an idea of the records that drew me in this time, I’ve put together a selection of tunes I’ve found at the record fair this weekend. I hope they inspire you.

Next stop is Paris this weekend to play @frequenceparis and do some more digging :)

Because one can never have enough records! by @bonnefooi_

I’ve not been super active lately with posting here and sharing my finds and gigs but i’m still doing the record thing and playing every week.. Found some cool things at a record fair today and planning on hunting for some more this weekend.

Here is a photo with some nice finds and good stuff that’s in my bag a these days. Still looking at boxes loaded with very good CD’s and cassettes that I need to proces, been thinking of doing radioshows again and share the music via that platform to keep it flowing…. Hope everybody is doing well! by @bonnefooi_

Been spending quite some time in this room lately, manipulating sounds, finding new workflows and learning about all the technical aspects that come along with it. Working with these machines, specificly older samplers and learning their ways is a slow and inspiring journey. Sitting down and taking the time to learn using a machine is giving me quite some joy, slowing everything down…

On another note i’ve just recieved the masters for the hiphop project i’ve done with @ravenkangee , soon heading to the pressing plant… 18 track double LP incoming! Very happy with how this turned out. I’ll share more when the records are here, also feel free to send me a message if you are interested in getting a copy and i’ll add you on the list.

Now back to pressing buttons :) by @bonnefooi_
