Initial styling and design on this Piñon pine. This short and squat, semi cascading tree is currently a favorite and what I think will be something truly different. For such a small tree it’s got great character.

Collected summer 24.

Removed from its box last spring and planted in this terracotta pot.

Amazing how much these piñon backbud when they are styled and old needles plucked. Leggy branches that I was hoping would respond with backbuds have done exactly that. Making possible a very clean and compact design in the next 2-3 years.

Per usual, I’d love to hear anyone’s pot suggestions for this tree?

Nursery Stock Shimpaku, it wasn’t labeled, but possibly Kishu

Big thanks to my boy @apexbonsaistudio on helping me get this tree dialed . Been doing this a long time but I still learned A TON from him in the process. Humbling quite frankly knowing that I don’t know much!

This’ll be a tree that will be slow to age and gain the right Mochi Komi, but I fully intend on seeing it through.

I keep calling this tree the only child. The 2 parents left and center and the only child holding on, but eagerly wanting to leave the safety of its parents.

What type of pot would you envision?

Twin Trunk Englemann Spruce

Repotted this spring into this Redtail Pottery pot @

Styled a few weeks ago.

If you can’t tell I love more upright high alpine style trees. This tree is showing excellent vigor and growth. Looking forward to pad development and potentially reducing some of the branches.

I also love the pot and its color for this tree. I often get tired of brown ceramics for conifers and generally speaking get tired of high end pots across the board. Glad I snagged this one before I became so jaded 😅 and before Mike stopped making pots!

It’s done so well and gotten awfully shaggy, with some wire beginning to bite. After next springs growth hardens off I’ll need to a clean up and re-wire.

My final piñon display. A humble piñon that was collected 5 years ago, just to confirm I could collect them. Test was successful and it is aged nicely in this rock. In another 5 years it’ll be so much better.

The stands were assembled relatively last minute and were ultimately meant to mimic shadow Bo’s frames typically built for fine art. In this case bonsai.

The mirrors were a VERY last minute choice and were added to create a bit more of a dynamic display that changed as the lighting and background changed. They mirrors almost disappear with the black shadow lines.

The accent is a lava rock with native mosses and a few small clumps of buffalo and blue grama.

Not my favorite display but fun to throw some concepts out there with many more piñon to come!

Here was my final display for my Sagebrush at the RMBS annual show

For a first time displaying a tree publicly, I def went unorthodox with this one. I decided to lean into the soft, silvery gray color palette you see in the Sage brush fields. First off, the Sage Brush is not something you see too often and this one is 4 years in and really showing great character.

I had my friend and fellow norteño @loganwannamaker out of Taos NM craft these vessels. His studio is in the very fields this tree was collected. His signature glaze and maker mark felt appropriate. The accent pot is probably too big, but we’ll adjust in round 2!

The accent is a collection of pussy toes and desert marigolds found growing in clumps in the fields. To tie the pot together I added one small patch of dwarf puss toes in the trees pot.

The surface of the pots have mixed lichen rocks and lichen with a small patch of orange lichen in each pot. I wasn’t sure if this would come off as kitsch or contrived, but the overall vibe on the covering at the show was very positive. Including dope words of praise from @jenniferpricebonsai and @bonsaimirai

Lastly the stand was a bit last minute, but crafted from layers of soft pine, then shaped with an angle grinder and sanding disks until smooth. I applied several coats of white wash and in hindsight I would’ve toned the white down slightly.

Overall though, I had a blast and was very proud of my display. EVERYONE in the @rocky_mountain_bonsai_society was so welcoming and friendly so thank you to everyone who took the time to chat with me. Especially @larchbud and @realwillkernsbonsai and @tjluetkemeyer . Not surprising for bonsai people though as it is a wonderful community and the RMBS was no exception. I am incredibly motivated to make my way back up every year and bring my very best. I’ve got some goodies coming down the pipeline. 505 represent! ITS CALLED NEW MEXICO

ROLANDS TREE

Today is my buddy Roland’s Bday. I shared the story of this tree and him in a previous post. 4 distinct apex for his 4 beautiful children. An unmistakable spire of deadwood that is just as important to the composition. I miss him everyday.

I’ve decided that I will be sharing this tree at the RMBS show next weekend. This tree is not show ready, but I made this super cool stand for another tree, and the other tree just didn’t look right. Well, Roland’s tree fits perfectly. It feels meant to be.

Ive got two other displays going into the show, but this one is special.

Yatsubusa Elm. Still so much to do, but it’s come a long way. See the final slide for the original sketch idea. Tree is there! Winter silhouette should be pretty darn nice this year.

Elms are some of the few deciduous trees that fully thrive here in NM. So naturally I have several.

In need of a mildly better display spot for my trees to take a few photos, I repurposed this old display table I would use at my art shows when I was running Danny Hart Design Studio. I made it into a poor man’s Tokonama which allows for some simple and humble displays to be put together. I added this light a few weeks ago that gives me some night time viewing. Right above my small water feature, it’s my own very simple slice of bonsai heaven.

One seed juniper.

Still looking for that bottom right branch to extend out left more, thickening of some key branches and general density and internode tightening, but overall I’m happy with this comp!

Like others the grasses and cactus are really maturing nicely to give some visual balance to the asymmetrical form. I just love the softness of blue gramma and the elegance of the seed stocks.

Probably more penjing than bonsai, but regardless I’m dam excited to style this tree when the time is right.

I collected this tree last spring in northern NM where it was sitting on a rock pocket and popped right off the surface loaded with microriza and fine feeder roots. Which is not a typical@collection for me here.

The rock it sits in was created from a collection of lichen covered lava rock in the same area with native plants planted in and around the composition. Hedgehog cactus, desert marigold, native pine duff mosses and blue grama grass planted in the back to create some height and perspective. The entire piece was wired into a very nondescript black ceramic plant saucer, with the intention of it not being too visually loud.

The tree itself has great representation of our native pine with tons of bark beetle damage, craggy bark and dense amounts of short needles.

I may style this fall but also might wait till next spring.
