Hello, yes, I’ve been influenced. 👋

Both of these sound VERY up my alley and I am so excited to get to them soon.

May We Feed the King - jumping (blurring?) timelines between a modern day historical curator and a king, shortlisted for the Booker prize, it has been impossible to escape this one on insta and I’m ready to see what the hype is about. I majored in anthropology and almost majored in history so this seems fully up my alley.

The Song of Stork and Dromendary - I only just started seeing this one pop up, but every single review seems to be giving it a glowing 5 stars and I’m just *intrigued*. It’s been described as a philosophical puzzle as it is split into several parted and stories which I believe may span centuries. It seems also to be steeped in gothic/moody atmospheres à la the Brontë sisters (whom this is supposed to be partly inspired from). A love letter to writers and readers? I don’t know. All I know is I want to read this and everything I see about it sounds perfect.

I haven’t gotten very far in The Oppermans, but for a book by a German-Jewish author and literally written as the N*** came to power, it has some surprisingly humorous tongue-in-cheek moments. Am enjoying it and hoping to make a good dent tonight.

Meanwhile, the house is spookified (including the bookshelves 🎃) and the entire week has been wonderfully overcast & rainy due to the hurricane offshore.

Hope everyone’s doing well. Tell me what you’re reading?

Read this over the weekend and what a surprising little book this was! It’s the sort of book where it’s best to know as little as possible going in, but as for how I got on with it…

At first I was just sliding into this easy little story about a woman grieving the loss of her husband. Then the atmosphere slowly starts shifting…something is not Quite Right, very à la Shirley Jackson or Catherine Blackwood in a way you can’t entirely put your finger on. Toward the end I had the very unsettling feeling where I knew something bad was about to happen but wasn’t quite sure how things would unfold, and then the last few pages hit and had me doing absolute double takes. Definitely recommend, especially for how short and readable this one is.

I’ll definitely be looking into more of Tuttle’s work, many of which lean into a more sci-fi/fantasy/horror genre, I believe. Also, I was weirdly intrigued to find she dated George R.R. Martin, but that’s neither here nor there lol.

To anyone else who read this, who else was Googling the painting to see it at first? 😂 No, just me?

Btw I’m back in Osten Ard with book two of the Memory, Sorrow, and Thorn series. It’s rare for me to read the next book in a fantasy book so quickly but I just so want to be back in this world and see where Simon’s story goes! I also appreciate that you are dropped right in where we left off. That’s probably my biggest pet peeve in the Sun Eater series, every book it seems like I have to reorient myself and I’m like wait, wym I missed all this in between stuff? 😩

Anyway, what’s everyone else reading going into the weekend? I’ll probably pick up a shorter book alongside this one this weekend. I’m thinking My Death!

Posting about this book two days in a row because I inhaled it and loved it. Is this the year of witchy women stories dealing with Men and being poor? Between this, Hurricane Season, and I Gave You Eyes and you Looked Toward Darkness, I can tell you my ladies are angryyyyy. Translated women coming in hot for me this year. 🔥

Saints & the dead. A haunted house of matriarchs & a hatred for the rich. If any of that sounds intriguing, then give in to the dark side, let the hate flow through you and pick this book up.

“The house breathes. The house holds bodies and secrets. The house is visited by ghosts, by angels that line the roof like insects, and by saints that burn the bedsheets with their haloes.”

So reads the blurb on the back, and I for one am so excited to crack open this weird little book tonight. It sounds haunted house-y. It sounds witchy. It sounds like the perfect read for fall eve. Also, check out the incredible cover, endpapers, and dedication. Influenced by @alifeonbooks!

What are you reading this week?

This is some OG weird girl fic. I mean come on, a woman encounters a bear and gets it on with it? That a, uh, interesting premise. First published in 1976, it’s easy to see why this book initially sparked some heated backlash.

Unfortunately, this story just didn’t have enough teeth to it. The story begins with the MC, Lou, who is sent to a historical house located on an island in order to catalogue its contents for her job. On arrival, she discovers there is also a pet bear that was kept by the previous inhabitants. Cue a mental crisis that leads to a romp with a bear.

First of all, this woman is way too chill about the fact that she now has a pet bear to take care of. I was also let down to discover this bear she encounters is not actually wild, but oh well. This is a woman clearly repressed, socially and sexually slotted into boxes that she evidently needs release from in the form of Bear—evidently the only creature that understands her.

I think my main issue was that I felt so distanced from Lou. Engel’s prose, while having occasional glimmers of beauty and resonance, more often felt weird and stilted in a way that never let me feel like I understood Lou. Her actions rarely made sense to me, and that disconnect made it hard to get more out of her experience than the surface story.

An old German folk tale about how the devil takes root in a small town. The spider and its seeming omnipresence was actually very creepy, but honestly the story itself felt twice as long as it needed to be and too repetitive. I feel like I could have read a wiki summary of this folk story and felt satisfied. Still, not a bad, quick read to enter spooky season with!

By far my favorite from these three, At The Edge of the Woods is the story of Laura, a woman who comes to live alone in an old cabin in the Italian mountainside.

Is she a witch? Why does she live alone out there? These are questions the town (and reader) have as they side-eye her existence.

This is a book that explores gender roles and the autonomy of women, an by @book.explorer

Woman shags bear? Or something?

Had to read this while staying in a cabin in the woods. Reviews to come post trip for everything I’ve read out here.
