Happy November! I'll be open to queries all month long over on Query Tracker.

If you are hoping to query me with something that I am not currently looking for (picture book, memoir, religion), please check back in April. I already have many wonderful, active authors and artists in these areas and need to prioritize them.

Thank you for your courage and vulnerability in sharing yourself with me and with the world! by @bookbarrista

Thanks @womenwritewest for having me this week in Phoenix! Great weather and great conversations! It was nice to get out of Alaska for a few days to visit another stunning part of our country. Keep in touch, ladies! by @bookbarrista

What a special day! @jessicaiwanski had a great turnout for her launch party at @literallybookshop! I loved seeing all the people who love her show up in support, but ALSO, what a great event she organized! So many perfect little details! Also the cutest bookshop ever!

Congratulations, Jessica, Angela, and @gnomeroadpublishing on a beautiful book, and thanks for allowing me to be part of the team!

Also so great to see @laurendfulter_author and @kevans628 in person! 🎉 by @bookbarrista

Congratulations to Charles Rohrbacher and @churchpublishinginc on the release of THE ILLUMINATED SOUL. This beautiful book pairs Charles’ art with meditations on the “Prayer of the Three Holy Young Men” from Daniel.

From the publisher: “Designed for both seasoned prayers of the Liturgy of the Hours and those meeting the Benedicite for the first time, this gorgeously crafted manuscript offers gentle commentary and personal reflections that deepen understanding and draw the reader into meditation. It reflects on the Benedicite as a prayer for our own age, offering courage and consolation amid the “fiery furnaces” we face collectively and individually—especially in a world shaped by climate crisis and uncertainty.”

So grateful to be on this team! by @bookbarrista

Pre-orders for Ellie Rose Mattoon's THE MAVERICK'S MIDWIFE are now available!

Exclusively from Third Rail, pre-orders include a signed copy, book-related goodies that smell and taste and look amazing (srsly), and ways to connect with the incredible women in your life. Plus, they are hands-down the best way to support our authors and our press. Link in bio⚡

Here's the back cover:

Vienna, 1847.

Childbirth is a dangerous affair, especially for women laboring in the doctor’s ward at Vienna’s maternity hospital rather than its midwifery clinic. Even midwifery student Anna Maier wants nothing to do with medical men after losing her sister to the mysterious, rampant doctor's plague known as childbed fever.

But when Dr. Ignaz Semmelweis, a maverick obstetrician, opens an investigation on childbed fever, Anna sees a chance to find answers to her sister's death. The two begin a discrete partnership—verboten in its crossing of gender lines and direct insubordination to hospital rules—and Anna soon finds herself in anatomy theatres where the only other woman in the room is the cadaver.

With women delivering and dying every day, Anna must choose between the safety of her own compassionate profession and the danger of stepping beyond it for a greater good. If she fails, she risks losing her sister a thousand times over again. And if she succeeds, what does that make her—a traitor, a medical man, or a maverick herself?

A pivotal time in history told with the clear-eyed determination of a young woman in science, THE MAVERICK'S MIDWIFE is the story of what it means to try when the barriers are high and the outcome is uncertain—but it just might all be worth it.

How might women bloom - and the world change - if they stepped beyond the confines of gender norms? Our next book explores that question through the life of a 19th-century Viennese midwifery student who dares to find answers for why women are dying in childbirth every day.

A pivotal time in history told with the clear-eyed determination of a young woman in science, Ellie Rose Mattoon's work of STEMinist historical fiction, THE MAVERICK'S MIDWIFE, is the story of what it means to try when the barriers are high and the outcome is uncertain—but it just might all be worth it.

(And she's gorgeous to boot 😍)

I posted recently about starting a new mother-daughter book club to read Emma M. Lion, but I’ve actually been part of a book club with the mothers in this group for years! We read non-fiction books, and we meet on Zoom at night after the family events have wound down. Even though we could, in theory, meet in person.

Our families joke about our “wine club” because we do, in fact, usually lock ourselves in our bedrooms with a glass of something to talk and decompress. We’re finishing Atomic Habits this weekend, as pictured here with a homemade cocktail using Aurora Gin from @anchoragedistillery and some fireweed simple syrup that my daughter harvested and created, then turned into soda with the neighbors (@akfoodguy) SodaStream.

We read the books, we truly do! I think this one is our… seventh? But it’s also absolutely our best social hour (ok, two) of the week. Very grateful for these friends.

We found Atomic Habits to be very accessible and digestible, but I think we’ll go for something meatier next time. Ideas for us? What are your favorite non-fiction group reads? by @bookbarrista

Elliot Bay on a sunny day! We took a quick weekend trip to Seattle to catch a Mariners game and do some rock climbing. We managed to also tuck into FOUR bookstores and the world’s first Costco.

Life is about to get very busy with the end of summer, and I’m so grateful to have traveled so much and gone on so many adventures this year! by @bookbarrista

What to do when you have approximately two free hours in Portland? That’s a no-brainer! I’ve now been to the largest bookstore in the US!

Powell’s wasn’t the focus of our trip, but it certainly fit the theme! 16 of us friends toured the Willamette Valley this month, sampling local wine, beer, and whisky. We threw in a couple of hikes, daily Mass, a Benedictine Abbey with a rare books tour, and some awesome music to round things out! Scroll to the end for a rare photo of my cute hubby. We are celebrating twenty years married this year! by @bookbarrista

Ok, Emma M. Lion fans, I need ideas!!

My local mother-daughter (13yo+) book club is tackling this beauty, and I want to make it special for everyone!

Tell me (without spoilers, please) some themes to draw on for a party and gifts. It’s epistolary, so I’m already planning on writing a fancy invitation letter to give out with books. What else have you done or would you do?

Ideas can be free and/or easy (recipes, activities), or spendy. I’d like lots of options!

And, go!

(@juliegrahambooks and @faithhough42 I hope you’ll comment!!) by @bookbarrista
