If you’re new to fantasy, Riyria Revelations by Michael J. Sullivan is a series I would feel comfortable recommending.

It revolves around Royce and Hadrian, two thieves who take a job and end up in a much bigger mess than they expected. There’s plenty of trouble, politics, and people they probably shouldn’t trust.

Royce hooked me first. He’s mysterious, angry, and pretty much a straight-up killer. Hadrian brings the humor and the honor. He’s still a thief, but he has lines he won’t cross.

I liked their back-and-forth pretty quickly. Watching their friendship grow as they went through everything together is what kept me reading. When it was over, I wanted more.

The reading order is:
📖 Theft of Swords
📖 Rise of Empire
📖 Heir of Novron

Those three volumes contain six novels.

Who’s your favorite pair of characters in fantasy?

I’m not a big fan of taking selfies, but I figured I’d put a face to the reviews so you know who’s behind Bookbound Realm.

I’m Cory. I created this page and the website to share what I’m reading, help people find good books, and have some actual conversations about them.

And if I’m taking a selfie, I might as well show off my signed copy of Arcanum Unbounded 😂 Swipe to see the signature.

Thanks for following along and talking books with me. You can find my reviews and join the discussions at bookboundrealm.com.

Mat’s hilarious. Between the drinking, gambling, and crazy antics, I’d read a whole book just to see what trouble he gets himself into next. He’d probably insist none of it was his fault, either.

Cuthbert’s another one I’d want more of. I loved Roland’s backstory in Wizard and Glass, and Cuthbert’s smart mouth was a big part of that. Give me more of him and the old crew.

For Sirius, I’d want his life before Azkaban. Him and James getting into trouble, the Marauders, and their lives during the first war. There’s enough there that I’d happily read his side of it.

And Aragorn’s years as a ranger would make a hell of a story. I’d like to follow some of those adventures before he ever meets the hobbits in Bree.

Who would you give their own book? One of these four, or somebody I missed?

The Wise Man’s Fear is the second book in Patrick Rothfuss’s planned trilogy, The Kingkiller Chronicle. Taking Kvothe beyond the University gives him plenty of chances to prove how talented he is—and how much trouble he can cause. A few stretches take their time, but it left me wanting more.

Fair warning: book three, The Doors of Stone, still hasn’t been released. Start the series at your own risk. I would personally start it again knowing the series isn’t finished.

I’m really enjoying Empire of the Vampire so far. The vulgarity took some getting used to, but Kristoff’s almost poetic writing makes even the most horrific things feel beautiful. He balances beauty and terror on a razor’s edge, and both can take your breath away.

His characters are likable and unlikable in the best possible way. The villains are monstrous and undeniably evil, but also charismatic and compelling. I hate them, but I still want to read more of them.

I can’t wait to finish and write my full review. I’ll post it on bookboundrealm.com when I’m done.

A book I’d recommend even though I’ve been waiting years for the last book to be released. Such a good series. Would you start a series if you were unsure the last book would ever be released?

Reading to relax. Stephen King had other plans.

What book stressed you out?

I wouldn’t change The Dark Tower’s ending.

There was a lot of laughter and sadness getting through this series. I loved how it wrapped up, and it still left me with plenty to think about afterward.

Did the ending work for you, or did you want something different? Keep the spoilers out for anyone still reading.

This chair has seen a lot of fictional wars. Valour was a good one.

What book would you leave here for me to read next?

Royce and Hadrian’s banter is a big part of why I recommend Riyria. The friendship is what kept me reading.

If you haven’t tried it, I’d start with Theft of Swords by Michael J. Sullivan.

Everybody needs a friend who’ll walk into Mordor with them. Most of mine won’t even answer the group chat. 😂

I loved Aragorn, but Frodo needed Sam. Their friendship is one of my favorite parts of The Lord of the Rings.

Who’s your favorite ride-or-die pair in fantasy? Royce and Hadrian are right up there for me too.

The people at the top get stronger by taking from everybody underneath them. The magic system in The Will of the Many by James Islington was one of my favorite parts.

I liked Vis, the friendships, and how the whole hierarchy worked. Some of the academy stuff felt a little rushed, but that ending gave me plenty to think about.

Did this one live up to the hype for you? Keep it spoiler-free for anyone who hasn’t read it yet.
