I dont usually read Historical fiction as a genre, but with this book Anthem of the Thar, it immediately caught my attention with its title. It piqued my curiosity enough, and I’m grateful to Vijay Athiyarath for trusting me with an advance review copy of this book.

So coming to the story it is set against the backdrop of 1st world war, it showcases the contribution of the Jodhpur Lancers and the many unknown Indian soldiers whose courage and sacrifices deserve far greater recognition.

Through Shekha’s journey, our main character, the story subtly explores the tension between following one’s own heart and fulfilling responsibilities larger than oneself. The book largely follows the journey that Shekha traverses during the war and after.

What i liked about the book was the historical detailing which is one of its strongest aspects. From military campaigns and cavalry regiments to the cultural nuances of princely India, the amount of research woven into the narrative is evident without feeling forced.

What stayed with me most was the camaraderie among the soldiers. Watching men from different regions, cultures and backgrounds fight alongside one another, united by duty rather than their cultural differences. The writing in the book is both descriptive and immersive, painting vivid images of both the harshness of war and the landscapes of Rajasthan and beyond.

While I appreciated the lyrical prose and the language, there were moments where the pacing felt a bit slower than I would have liked. The narrative occasionally lingered on descriptions, making the overall flow feel a little static, especially during certain stretches. A slightly tighter pace would have made the reading experience even more engaging.

Beyond its historical setting, the novel also reflects on themes that continue to feel relevant today—duty, honour, personal choice and the expectations placed upon individuals by society.

Rakshas: The Fall of Halcyon by @ninad.mhatre2

First of all, a huge thank you to @ninad.mhatre2 for sending me a copy of Rakshas: The Fall of Halcyon. It was a pleasure stepping into the world you created.

“Dhumravaranam Tathasthaman.”

I don’t usually pick up a lot of science fiction, so I was genuinely intrigued to see where this story would take me. And I must say, I wasn’t expecting the world to be this detailed and well thought out.

Set in the 27th century, where Earth has entered a permanent Ice Age, humanity now survives inside the Seven Domes under the governance of an AI called SUPREMA, with Mars being their only hope for survival. Amidst all of this, we meet Reckon—someone who doesn’t quite belong to either the humans or the Rakshas. Without giving away too much, the story follows his journey as secrets begin to unfold.

What I loved the most was the imagination behind this book. Building an entirely new futuristic world is no easy feat, and the amount of thought that’s gone into every detail really shows. I could actually picture the scenes playing out in front of me as I was reading.

I also enjoyed how the story is sprinkled with references to Indian mythology—they never take over the narrative but instead add another layer to this fascinating world.

The character dynamics were another highlight for me. The banter felt natural, and the way each character’s origin were explored made the story feel even more immersive.

If I had to mention one thing, I’d say the pacing felt a little uneven in a few places. Tightening those sections just a bit could have made an already engaging story even more gripping.

And that ending… the cliffhanger has definitely made me curious to know what happens next and where Reckon’s journey leads from here.

Overall, Rakshas: The Fall of Halcyon is an ambitious science-fiction novel with rich world-building, AI-driven conflicts, and just the right touch of mythological inspiration.

If you are someone who enjoys immersive worlds, memorable characters, and stories that aren’t afraid to think differently, I’d definitely recommend giving this one a read.

Lallan Sweets by Srishti Chaudhary (@death.of.the.author )

I picked up Lallan Sweets with a little hesitation. Going in, I wasn’t quite sure how the Bollywood-style drama and larger-than-life moments would play out, and I wondered if it would be a little too over-the-top for my taste.

But I’m happy to say I was pleasantly surprised.

As the story unfolded, I found myself completely invested in the characters and the world they inhabited. What stood out to me the most was Tara’s character. She felt layered, resilient, and easy to root for, making her journey one of the highlights of the book.

The story has just the right blend of family drama, romance, emotions, and heartwarming moments. While there are dramatic twists, they never took away from the charm of the narrative. Instead, they kept me turning the pages, wanting to know what would happen next.

One thing I particularly enjoyed was how laddoos wasn’t just a backdrop but became a part of the story itself, adding warmth and bringing the characters and their relationships to life.

It’s been sometime since I finished this book, but it’s still one that I remember fondly.

If you’re looking for a feel-good read with memorable characters, family dynamics, romance, and a touch of Bollywood magic, I’d definitely recommend giving Lallan Sweets a try.

***📚Book Review***

Like many of my recent reads, this one is entirely Bookstagram’s fault🙈—and I’m so glad I gave in.😅🤭

When I started Strange Pictures by Uketsu, I honestly had no idea what I was getting into. My first thought was, “What do these pictures even mean?” But before I knew it, I was completely hooked.

This is one of those rare books that had me turning pages nonstop. Every time I thought I’d pieced the puzzle together, another twist completely changed my perspective. The story unfolds through three seemingly different cases, and as a reader, you almost become a detective yourself, trying to connect the dots before the author does.

What I enjoyed the most was how cleverly everything was put together. It’s evident that a lot of thought and research has gone into constructing the mysteries, yet the storytelling remains easy to follow without ever feeling confusing.

The only aspect that didn’t completely work for me was that a few of the coincidences felt a little too convenient. At times, they stretched believability just enough to make me pause.

That said, it didn’t take away from my overall reading experience. If you’re looking for a mystery that’s clever, fast-paced, and filled with unexpected twists, I’d absolutely recommend picking this one up.

Illustrated Book of Mythology: Curses & Boons by @deepakmrd27

I first came across this book through a fellow bookstagrammer’s recommendation, and as someone who enjoys mythology, I knew I had to give it a try.

The book brings together short retellings of many well-known mythological tales centred around curses and boons. Since most of these stories are already familiar, what truly stood out to me were the beautiful illustrations. They add so much life to the book, making it visually engaging and keeping you hooked from one story to the next.

The language is simple, easy to follow, and the book itself is quite short, making it a perfect read if you’re looking to finish something over a weekend or in just a couple of sittings.

As someone who loves mythology, I genuinely enjoyed reading this one from beginning to end.

***📚Book Review***

Lately, I couldn’t scroll through Bookstagram without seeing Tuesdays with Morrie pop up. Everyone seemed to have nothing but good things to say about it, so naturally, I had to see what the hype was about.

And wow… I’m so glad I did.

I don’t think I’ve ever annotated a book this much. Almost every few pages, there was another line I wanted to underline because it felt like something I needed to hear. It resonated with me in a way very few books have.

For those who don’t know, Tuesdays with Morrie by @mitchalbom is built around a series of conversations between Morrie Schwartz, a professor living with ALS, and his former student, Mitch. It’s a simple premise, but the conversations hold some of life’s biggest lessons.

Without giving away too much, what stayed with me wasn’t just Morrie’s wisdom—it was how easily we forget these truths in our everyday lives. We spend so much time worrying, complaining about the smallest inconveniences, chasing the next thing, that we often forget to appreciate the life we’re already living. Morrie gently reminds us to slow down, be present, love deeply, and value the people around us before it’s too late.

It’s a short read—I finished it in just a couple of days—but it’s one of those books that stays with you long after you’ve turned the last page.

Would I recommend it?

Without a second thought—yes.

I genuinely believe everyone should read this book at least once in their lifetime.

I picked this book up out of curiosity, but I definitely wasn’t expecting to finish it so quickly.

A Shimla Affair by @death.of.the.author follows the lives of three sisters—Noor, Afreen, and Nalini. Each of them is wonderfully different, yet they’re united by an unwavering sense of courage and a shared desire to contribute to India’s fight for freedom.

What I loved most was how effortlessly the story kept me turning the pages. Every chapter revealed something new, and just when I thought I knew where the story was headed, another twist caught me by surprise. The historical backdrop blends beautifully with the personal journeys of the characters, making the story feel both intimate and meaningful.

More than just a historical fiction, this is a story about family, resilience, sacrifice, and the choices people make during extraordinary times.

If you’re looking for historical fiction that’s engaging, emotional, and difficult to put down, I’d definitely recommend giving this one a read.
