Evan Bookie Alpert comes from the @slop.shop roster, a collective we have always appreciated for its instinctive ability to recognise talent operating outside the usual channels. @bookie_art’s work carries traces of Outsider Art, and this connection opens a conversation that reaches far beyond a single artist.

When Roger Cardinal coined the term “Outsider Art” in 1972, he used it to describe the spontaneous production of creators who lived completely outside academic training and conventional art. Jean Dubuffet had already articulated a similar vision with Art Brut: work emerging from the margins, made by individuals uninterested in institutional approval, driven by necessity rather than ambition. Their strength came from being unaligned, from creating without permission or pedigree.

Half a century later, AI is producing a new kind of outsider. Not because the medium is primitive, but because it removes barriers and gives space to creators who do not move through traditional artistic pathways. What Cardinal recognised as innate, instinctive practice, and what Dubuffet saw as the power of marginality, reappears now in another form: a movement shaped by people who create freely, without belonging to the systems that usually define legitimacy.

It is no coincidence that “AI slop,” a term used to dismiss this field, is instead reclaimed proudly by Slop Shop. Dubuffet did the same when he framed the “raw” as liberation rather than deficiency. In this sense, slop becomes a deliberate position, a space where images are not required to conform, impress or justify themselves. An aesthetic built on the right to remain unfiltered.

Alpert’s work moves through this threshold, but the shift concerns an entire generation. AI expands the field in a way no previous medium has, allowing creators to operate outside the hierarchies that once determined who was allowed to speak visually. It brings them closer to the instinctive, necessity-driven production that Cardinal and Dubuffet recognised in their outsiders.

And it is a position that we, much like Bookie, claim openly.
