Book 91 of 2026 ✨ 4/5
SPOILER FREE since this is brand new still!

Reading this collection of vignettes was a fun way to dip back into Basgiah! It’s been so long that I had to look up a few characters mentioned because I’d forgotten about them in the (nearly) two years since I finished Onyx Storm. I’ll definitely need a few YouTube videos for review once Book 4 comes out.

I figure some of the stuff covered in this collection will be important later - or may be important now but it’s been so long that I’ve forgotten - so my opinion may change down the line, but for me this was fine! I can’t say it was “omg rip my heart out so good” like Fourth Wing and Onyx Storm, but it was fine! I enjoyed being back in this world for a minute & I’ll come back gladly when we get the next installment.

Book 90 of 2026 ✨ 5/5
Some spoilers ahead.

We’ve known Faction Wars was coming since the first book, but fucking hell, I was not prepared for how much this book would be. At nearly 900 pages it’s FOR SURE overwhelming at times, but there’s also mass death, war, politics, and years of storylines colliding at once. It’s a lot because it should be a lot, but it’s worth the time.

The former crawlers coming back into the dungeon fucked me up more than anything. These are people who survived their own horrific experiences, got out, and willingly came back knowing they could die because they believe in Carl, Donut, and what they’re fighting for. I cried many times, and several were during the former Cookbook author chapters.

Watching Donut change is getting harder too. She’s only been conscious for about four months, and almost all of that has been trauma and survival. Carl has been unraveling for a while, but he’s starting to see that he isn’t the only one the dungeon is breaking.

Now onto the 10th floor. Faction Wars was huge, but the rebellion is only getting started. by @bookish.pdf

When folks ask how I read so much, I tell them it’s because I make it an intentional part of my day. I don’t wait for a good time to read, or to be in the right exact mood or things are quiet. Reading is maintenance to me - if I go awhile without wanting to, I know something in me is sick (probably my depression acting up tbh) so I read as soul maintenance if that makes sense.

I got one chapter read while getting my nails done, and I’ll probably listen to half a chapter of Fellowship of the Ring while doing PT exercises later.

I hit a 300 day reading streak on Fable today! I’m sure it’s longer than that but I’ve only been using Fable for that long. Here’s to the next 300 ❤️

Book 89 of 2026 ✨ 5/5
Some spoilers.

Frankenstein tells the story of Victor Frankenstein, a young scientist who creates a living being from cadaver parts and then immediately abandons him in horror. Left completely alone, the creation tries to find a place among humanity before eventually turning his anger toward the man who made him.

I loved this. It’s difficult not to empathize with the creation because there is no one else like him on earth. He is entirely alone, everyone who sees him is horrified by him, and no one is more disgusted by his existence than his own creator. That pain and loneliness eventually evolves into rage toward the person who brought him into the world and then left him to survive in it alone. There’s something painfully human about wanting connection so badly and being rejected so completely that eventually you stop asking to be loved and start wanting to hurt the people who refused to love you.

Frankenstein himself makes some absolutely fuck-ass decisions though. The monster tells this man he’ll be there to exact revenge on Frankenstein’s wedding night, and he somehow decides the move is to LEAVE HIS WIFE ALONE ON THEIR WEDDING NIGHT. Sir. What did you think was going to happen? You have watched this creature systematically kill the people you love. Perhaps consider what he meant by that threat.

The creation’s reaction when Frankenstein dies was one of the most affecting parts of the book for me. After everything between them, he’s devastated because the only person on earth who knew him even an inkling is gone. Frankenstein hated him and spent the end of his life hunting him down, but he was still the only other person who could understand where he came from and what he was.

Five stars for a 19yo baddie writing this more than 200 years ago and absolutely hitting the nail on the head about the pain of loneliness and what it can do to someone.
